So I'm in the market for a wireless home audio system and first I thought about just buying a bluetooth speaker, but having to lug it around from room to room just isn't appealing.

So what I am looking for is a way to have audio in each room (including bathroom) (6 rooms/zones in total) and if possible a single speaker that will sound good (if not dual speakers would be fine) and be hung on the wall and the ability to set each one up as a Zone. And then I would like to be able to use my phone to choose which Zone or multiple Zone I would like the music to play from.

Money isn't really an object, though I don't want to break the bank either. But I've always been a firm believer ya get what ya pay for.

You can't go wrong with a bunch of Sonos, few ones for small rooms, and fives for the bigger ones

    Edifier R2000DB Bluetooth Speakers, w/ 2xAUX, Optical In - £239/pr -

    https://www.amazon.co.uk/Edifier-R2000DB-Bluetooth-Bookshelf-Multiple/dp/B07CHQM8B7/

Edifier does make a range of speakers you could consider -

    All Speakers - Edifier UK

Those would be independent units. If you want a combined system where all rooms can be controlled from a single point (smart phone), the you need Network Streaming capability.

Bluesound, SONOS, and others have Network speakers of all sizes.

For example, here is the Sonos Play1 Network Speaker -

    All Speakers - Edifier UK

Here is the largest Sons Play 5 Network Speaker -

    https://www.amazon.co.uk/SONOS-PLAY-Smart-Wireless-Speaker-Black/dp/B015MWS9NU/

The speakers can be used individually or they can be Paired into a Stereo Pair.

    Bluesound has similar speakers -

    PULSE FLEX 2i

    PULSE MINI 2i

    PULSE 2i

If you want go to a larger system, then Yamaha makes the WXC-50 Network Pre-Amp (£250) and the WXA-50 Network Amp (£330).

Yamaha WXC-50 MusicCast Stereo Streaming Processor - Streaming / Networking - AudioVisual Online - UK Home Cinema and Hifi Specialists

Yamaha WXA-50 MusicCast Stereo Streaming Amplifier - Mini Systems - AudioVisual Online - UK Home Cinema and Hifi Specialists

You would use the WXC-50 Pre-Amp with Active Speakers or Studio Monitors. You would use the WXA-50 Network Amp (50w/ch) with common Passive Speakers. Active/Studio Speakers, depending on your taste, would cost between £300 and £500/pair. Passive Speakers would run between £250 and £500 or more per pair depending on how far you want to take it .

Yamaha last make stand alone Network Speakers somewhat similar to Sonos and Bluesound.

    Yamaha NX-N500 Network Speaker - £350/pr -

Yamaha NX-N500 White Wireless Bookshelf Speakers w/ MusicCast - Active / Computer Speakers - AudioVisual Online - UK Home Cinema and Hifi Specialists

Now you many not want a common solutions for every room. Each room could be treated independently. In one room you might want a full sized system, in that case, a system based around the Yamaha RN602 Network Receiver or the Yamaha RN802 Network Receiver would be a good choice.

    Yamaha R-N602

    Yamaha R-N803D Network Amplifier

In another room, perhaps a smaller system like the Yamaha WXA-50, and in a room with limited needs, something like the Yamaha NX-N500 speakers.

This is not everything, I'm simply trying to give you a cross section of possibilities. There are many more to choose from, but you should have some idea of the range of possibilities.

Anything that involves a few units in each room becomes a ball ache

I agree. You have me sold on the Sonos. Now just have to decide which units to get. And I'm wondering if I opted to hang on the wall... does any of that bass transfer through the mount? And did they discontinue the Play 3? I see mention of them online but on their products page it doesn't list the 3's.

I think the 3 is gone, but I'm not 100%. If you wanted with the Sonos you could set up a conventional stereo in the main room and have the standalone speakers in different rooms.

I believe you can get dedicated stands and brackets for any Sonos unit, allow a bit of cash for these and they should be pretty optimised for sound

    SONOS -

    Shop All Products | Sonos

It seems as if the Play:1 and the Play:5 are the only products available from Sonos. Notice both can be purchased in Pair, and sync'd together for a Stereo Pair.

I have some of these a few years ago to use outside on the patio.
They can be powered or charged and used on their own as have built in batteries .
Remarkably good and the kids take them everywhere and they can all be linked / switched on/off at will all from your phone.

Ultimate Ears Portable Speakers, Bluetooth Speakers, Wireless Speakers

Might be worth a look / listen.
