I recently bought a pioneer vsx 859rds amp and a pioneer m-10x amp for the extra rear surrounds, The amp is dts, dolby digital and THX...When i play gladiator which is dts ex 6.1 the amp shows the extra rear surrounds working...
But when i play the phantom menace which is dolby digital ex the extra rear surrounds do no show on the display...when i select 7.1 though the extra rear surrounds do work..but i'm not sure if the sound coming out is split between the surround and rear surround speakers....Any ideas ?

I dont have your receiver so I dont have the exact answer for you. Somebody else will come along and tell you.

But in the mean time I can tell you that DD EX usually does NOT have a 'flag' no it to tell your reciever to activate the surround rear channels. On most amps you have to do it manually.
On the other hand dts have cleverly 'flagged' most of the their ES disks, so your receiver will instantly know there is an extra channel in the mix and will decode accordingly.

BTW - just FYI EX is not 6.1 it is 5.1, only dts 'discrete' is 6.1

    Dolby Digital 5.1 (standard)
Dolby Digital 5.1 EX (has centre rear, encoded in 5.1 surrounds)
    dts (standard)
dts ES matrix 5.1 (has centre rear, encoded in 5.1 surrounds)
dts ES discrete 6.1 (only true 6.1 format - not matrixed)

    Hope this helps.
    Regards
    Craig
