Hi

First off i want to say thank you for taking the time to assist today im currently about to buy my new gaming pc, my dream for a long time but have always been unable to do this my grandmother passed away recently and left me money £3000 with specific instruction to buy my dream rig so want to do her proud lol, i currently have 2 MSI Optix AG32CQ 31.5 QHD 144hz Monitors im posting the specs heres With the amd vs intel builds ive put together over past few months with a little bit about what sort of things i play and do,

Some of the games i play are

Star citizen
Arma 3
Ark
Escape from tarkov
Gta
Flight simulator 2020 (quite demanding apparantly when released)

i also want to introduce the HTC VIVE into my life in the near future

whilst playing i also stream from time to time also now ive done so much research on these system parts and i know usually intel is king in gaming but alot of ppl are also loving the amd so as you can imagine its a tad confusing, i just want something that will run everything i need on max settings with smooth and fast fps whilst also future proofing, the systems are the following also i know the new intels have been released but that takes me over budget

i really do appreciate the feedback people and i hope i can find the right one for me

For streaming the R9 3900x is king. I have one myself. The updated R9 3900XT is likely out very soon (basically a higher clocked 3900x) so you should get that instead when/if out.

I will say though that AMD system (and Intel one) looks pretty poor value and makeup. Where is it from?

For £3k you can do much better.

The AMD is from gladiator pc

So, I went to PC Specialists (for instance) and specced up this one with better: storage, RAM and still cheaper.

The AMD build has 2 512gb ssd and one 2tb i have 2 4tb drives at home already

Based of your guys advice i have changed a few things i have increased the main ssd from 512gb to 1tb and added 2 2tb drives also removed the sound card also

I don't think there's any point in going Intel currently if you're looking at anything above 1080p resolutions. And this includes the new line up. I've watched a ton of videos and at 1440p / 4K there's hardly anything in it between each Intel CPU and its equivalent AMD. And of course AMD has a commanding lead for productivity tasks.

AMD CPUs are all unlocked, ditto the motherboards. I look at Intel with disbelief now that they haven't learned from the walloping they are currently taking. For instance, you need to buy a more expensive motherboard to get your memory to what it's rated for. Cheap ones cap the memory (2666MHz for the i5, for instance). You'd think they'd drop all this "pay more to overclock" nonsense but no. Buying a new system, it has to be AMD, you get far more bang for your buck and the current Ryzen line up is impressive.

I'd like to understand @Greg Hook's view though. We're talking CPUs here, not GPUs :)

I do an awful lot of 3d modelling and rendering including getting back into streaming So amd was the go to for it all the build ait perfect by far but if any other suggestions on changes plz let me know going to be ordering in the next week or so :)

Given the fact that you seem to be using the PC for more than just gaming then yeah I would think that the 3900X is a better for for you. It's still a highly competent gaming PC as well as being better than Intel's offerings when it comes to productivity and within a similar price range. The exception would be if you use Photoshop a lot as that tends to favour frequency of core quite heavily.

That being said if you were ONLY interested in gaming then I would have been more likely to have steered you towards an Intel CPU. A 10600K is a great gaming CPU for the price and if you want the absolute best framerate possible then the 10900K isn't going to be beaten too often. You may choose to discount Intel due to concerns over the recent security issues that seem to have plagued them recently (more so than AMD) and whether that would result in a loss of performance down the road and I feel that would be valid concern. Also they will draw more power and produce more heat although since you were looking at a decent 240mm AIO cooling solution I don't feel like that would be a problem. It's more that a smaller air cooler (or AIO) will likely have more trouble keeping it cool in CPU intensive tasks.

That being said with the 3900XT all but confirmed at this point I would be highly tempted to wait until the announcement due early June just to see if that is worth waiting for or whether AMD announces price cuts to existing Ryzen 3 processors.

Anyway, with regards to your proposed builds @BCNX your updated build looks pretty good to me. I would have definitely queried the inclusion of the Asus Xonar soundcard. I had issues with a similar albeit much older card that I used to have in my previous rig. Some old games didn't work with it and some new ones were also not too good. I ended up having to resort to the unofficial drivers most of the time. Plus having another PCI-E card that may block airflow to your GPU isn't necessarily ideal. In my case I had both my 680's in a custom loop so airflow to them didn't matter but in your case I would have had some concerns.

My only other real concern would be around buying a 2080Ti at this point. I was watching a vid by Moores Law is Dead. He's commenting on rumoured specs for the upcoming Nvidia 3*** series cards so everything must be taken with a grain of salt but as much as anybody is reliable when it comes to this sort of stuff his track record is fairly good. Enough that I try to bear what he says in mind.

Vid below and appropriate bit is at the 7.26 mark:

Moore's Law

Anyway, the TLDW is that the current series of Nvidia chips MAY age particularly badly when it comes to the newer technologies like raytracing. Enough that a 2080Ti may be close to performance of a 3060 in RTX applications. That's put down to the 2*** series being the first ever cards to feature real time ray tracing and as such their implementation isn't great in many respects. Nvidia is going to try and make it so that all their cards in the next gen series will give a great ray tracing experience and has significantly improved the chip design to maximise this across all their SKU's in the new lineup. With AMD going to be going heavy on Ray Tracing as well in their upcoming "Big Navi" chips as well as both the new Playstation and X-box consoles featuring AMD's GPU's with RT I think we will start to see ray tracing becoming a major selling point for both companies and subsequently prioritised by games developers.

My main concern is that if this money you have now is the "only" real money you are going to have for the next few years for major upgrades then getting a really high end GPU that may age badly and won't be able to be changed could be unfortunate. It might be worth getting something like a 2070 Super now which should still do a fantastic job at QHD and then sell it in 6 months or so and buy something like the 3080 or 3080Ti which might be a significant step up from the older (current gen) Nvidia 2*** cards. Also AMD will be bringing out "Big Navi" at some point and that is expected to give the 2080Ti a good run for it's money. Not to mention that AMD cards have a habit of aging better than their Nvidia counterparts although I would probably favour Nvidia in the driver department.

Again, this is based on speculation so at the end of the day if you really want your dream PC now then the 2080Ti is currently the best if you don't include the more productivity orientated TITAN.

Me personally, I would have loved to have built a new PC by now. My 5930K is still going fine though but my twin 1080Ti's are starting to show their age a bit in some games as I play at 4k (oh, SLI is well and truly dead by the way ) . However with both Nvidia and AMD expected to launch new high end chips before the end of the year I'm just having to hold on and wait. I would also like to ideally wait for next gen Ryzen as well. A few sites have reported in the last day or so that the 4000 series "could be" on 5nm+ which would be pretty big if AMD get to 5nm before Intel gets anywhere close to 7. But I think the 3900XT might be good enough for me if it gets a bit closer to the 10900K performance in gaming which is all that matter to me.

Sorry, this was quite a wall of text!!! I'm just in a very similar position though - having the money to build a really nice high end PC but feeling like I really need to wait for a few more things to be announced before pulling the trigger. Whether you also decide to wait is very much up to you. If my PC wasn't still pretty capable I would probably have gone for something like you are considering. As it is I'm just really hoping it lasts another 6 months so I get to have fun with some "next gen goodness"!!!

Based of your guys advice i have changed a few things i have increased the main ssd from 512gb to 1tb and added 2 2tb drives also removed the sound card also

etc etc

Ryzen works better with faster RAM - 3200-3600Mhz perhaps?

For a £2.9k system, you really should have more than 1TB of SSD and 2TB of HDD. Personally, I would go with at least:

  • 512GB M2 for Windows and core programs;
  • 1TB SSD for game installs;
  • 2TB HDD for storage.
Also - I think if you went with Chillblast or PC Specialists you can get the same spec for about £150 cheaper.

Thank you guys with the system itself i already have my 1tb ssd at home from my omd rig thats going in so gone with the one small mp600 ssd for windows and then 4tb storage for all my programs and any overflow, then my 1tb for games, in regards to money ill always have cash in future to upgrade if needs be but not until Late next year (paying for holiday when lockdown ends) so this is just a for now situation im in 2 minds weather to go for intel as alot are saying it will still do the rendering work plus ill get the best for games haha so confused right now haha

@Ono updated with the changes to cooler and also hdd to ssd How u think thats lookin thats £2918.22

£3k is a lot of money for a PC with the diminishing returns when going above £2k.

It feels like you have the core top components right with the R9 3900x and RTX 2080Ti but just added lots of bells and whistles and RGB which add little return. Now, this is just me as I dislike RGB.

If you are after the best then that is fine. But otherwise, if it were me:
  • an X570 motherboard should have Gen 4 storage to make the most of it. This will be useful for games like Star Citizen and Flight Sim 2020 where fast texture streaming may be needed.
  • the H115i cooling with 280mm fans is also excessive unless you plan on OC. I run my 3900x on the Hydro 80i and it is fine.
  • I think there is no need to pay for thermal paste as the cooling block has it applied.
  • The RAM should be 3200-3600Mhz.
Right now, I would also seriously consider waiting until early July when the higher clocked 3900XT will be released.

Thank you @Ono

im a lover for the rgb not gna lie i went with the mp600 for the os for now and in a months time i can get a better 1tb ssd for the games ram also maybe early next year i want to go to 3600 im nt gna lie im very impatient and am looking to buy beginning of july so might wait and see nearer the time what cpu might pop up with the above 3900x i feel this is a beast of a machine and im really happy with it i kno i wont have problems with games on it

for now i will remove the thermal paste from the order aswell as changing the cooler to something better suited i have just had a quote for an i9

I just don't think Intel is in the running to be honest compared to the AMD offerings.

Anyway, given the RGB, looks and the budget, you could look at this as the ultimate PC for £3,000.

I personally would not do Gen 4 SS storage I have specified at this moment unless money was no object (in the same way I would not do RGB) but it will very likely benefit FS 2020 and Star Citizen players.
