Hi everyone the time has come for me to upgrade my MP3 player. I have an Iriver at the moment and although am very happy with it there just isnt enough memory in there for me anymore!! 128mb :(

what i am looking for is a qulaity player. But it has to be small. I would have gone for the IPOD SHUFFLE 1GB but the problem with that is that there is no screen and i cant select certain tracks if i wanted to.

But i love the size of it. am looking for something very similar in size and weight. the thinner the better. But number priorty is of course the sound quality.

Also can someone recommand me a good pair of head phones. dont mind spending a bit on the headphones.

min storage space though 1GB please.

any help would be most welcomed....

April's What Hi-Fi S&V completed a group test on the Shuffle + 5 other players: Creative MuVo, iRiver iFP, Rio Forge Sport, Sony NW-E55 & Thompson Lyra.

Sadly, but unsurprisingly, WHFS&V continued it's policy of reviewing the i-pod against machines of different specs, even when a similarly speced model is available.

The i-pod shuffle won :boring: , with the MuVo a close second, and Rio third.

The MuVo has a screen, and is available in a 1GB model for 74 UK pounds. That's 13 less than the Shuffle:

I bought an iPOD shuffle after hearing my cousin's 256Mb Sony NW-E55 and the iPOD sound soooooo much better, believe me...

I was afraid because there is no screen, but then, I don't need it.

But the new Sony players similar to the Shuffle look good too!

Umar. What Hi-Fi S&V have a special mag out at the moment - Ulitimate Guide To MP3. There's asection in there on ultraportables where they review 29 players.

Be warned - read the reviews rather then just looking at the star ratings. Also note that with some of the players they review a version with a smaller memory, but fail to mention that a 1gb model is available

As got 'phones, I'll recommend (again) Sennheiser PX100s at c.£35. But there's a section in there on 'phones, too.

The Sony NW-E99 is another version of the Sony NW-E55, I prefer the iPOD Shuffle by far in sound quality or user friendlyness!

And it needs batteries! If you like Sony I would prefer something like the SONY NW-E407...

£29 from Argos, and even cheaper elsewhere. (I got mine for £20 from a local hifi shop).

I like the iPOD ones... look at this post of mine: http://www.avforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=226516

Try the Shuffle and the Sony 407 and see for yourself if you can live without a display, I can...

Umar, we've currently been discussingthe very smallest players (1gb and under).

For only a few pounds more you can buy a mini player like the i-pod mini or Zen Micro.

Maybe too big for what you want - how are you carrying these units around?

 I like them enough to keep them, but could consider some Sennheiser MX 450 ou 500...

I love the iPOD mini, but for the motorbike I prefer the Shuffle, and i can take it to work and use as a USB Flash memory... :)

So... go for the Shuffle or the Sony 407 (more expensive but has display) or the 507 (even more expensive but has FM tuner), but these two reach iPOD Mini prices...

I would only buy other headphones after trying the stock ones...
