Hi all,
I have the opportunity of getting a good deal on the Neat SX1 , I am wanting to upgrade from my Amphion Argon 1's. I have read good things about them. What are your views on them, good or bad. I am powering them with the pre out of an Anthem MRX 520 to a PS S 300 Stellar power amp
thanks

If you liked the sound of those baby Amphions... its worth considering their bigger brother.. the Argon 3Ls as a serious floorstanding upgrade.. the only and i mean only mull point on the 3Ls is that midband is forward and can be quite aggressive on a poor recording with a lighter lower end.

The Neat SX1's are a lovely balanced floorstander. look a bit odd with that sloping design but the music play ability .. beautiful and true.

I suppose it boils down to that mid range..... and only a demo will confirm that for you.

I can buy the Neats on a 14 day approval, and have heard only good things about them. Yes, the 3LS would be the ideal, but at a price, as they have just increased, although a friend may have his up for sale soon, but I would only be able to demo them at his house, and his Vincent amp and cables are very different to mine, plus his room is different

The neats are a steal at the price and very capable. I would very much advise a demo in either case as they have a very different presentation compared to the Amphion sound.

I am not familiar with the S 300... but i am more than familiar with the Sprout to say that if that S 300 follows the same characteristics.. then you are more than good with the neat.

Just a crazy thought out of the box.... Standmount upgrade for the Argon ... Dynaudio Evoke 20 or the Special 40 (ex demos are easily come by) .. Alternative floorstanders .. Spendor's A4 / Russell K RED 120 (ex demo's are around the £2500)

All in reach with a trade in of those lovely Argons :)

I auditioned a pair last year on the end of naim kit. To my ears, very musical and able to extract small tonal differences.

Haven't listened to the sx1, but currently running the sx2. Beautiful sounding speakers. Only set i've ever owned with no listening fatigue. Superb highs, lovely mids and nicely detailed bass. Buy with confidence in my opinion.
Ps, I think they look great and their diminutive size has garnered massive wife approval.

The New price for the Argons is £1200, my dealer has only offered me £400, and they look brand new, original box and free Atacama stands

That is a bit rubbish. When I bought my Neat's earlier in the year I got £250 for my B&W 685s2 (Inc. stands), and they're not in the same bracket as your speakers. Probably could have got a bit more on ebay, but didn't think it was worth the hassle.

This looks fairly typical of a dealer... £1200 new... £600 2nd hand immediately.. dealer wants his mark up for overheads etc etc... hence the £400 .. and he will then probably put them on resale for around £650-1000 depending on condition, box, brand "recognisability" and area. Thats typically how somewhere like a cash converter or similar place would price.
Your other option is that well known auction site or private sale with that bum deal on offer :(

Looks like you might have to hang on to them then for the "man cave" :)
