Afternoon my lovelies, i've been having a fiddle with the old easy cap and i've been thinking about the upcoming call of duty tournament......
Now, i've unforunatley been given the version of the easy cap which does not capture in Pal60, leaving me with black and white videos.
So basically, based off this example below, i'm more than happy to video the tournament and if i get enough interest, am happy to track down a colour version of the same device, but obviously if nobody has any interest in watching the tournament after then i probably will just put the idea to bed in 'jay's fad bin'™

While i appreciate the video is only in black and white, i hope that it demonstrates what could be achieved. The version i've got is in full DVD resolution at 29.7 fps and does look very good. Hey, i might even throw in some video editing too

Here's my 7:12 long video test and if you're not into D&B either don't play it or mute it :)
YouTube - call of duty world at war easy cap test
edit - watch in HQ (bottom right of screen) - makes it a lot clearer

EDIT - All fixed now because i got a new capture device :)

    YouTube - zombie test
(for larger widescreen version - http://***********/cdbu9y)

    bring on the tournament

First off: nice playing but you need to peddle the trigger with the ppsh for medium/long range kills :smashin:

I would be interested in watching the tournament (mainly to see who whores the mp40) But watching it in black and white does give it a bit of a retro feel which i personally like:thumbsup:

    yeah, cheers cato :smashin:

basically the device has 2 variants, one which captures NTSC 443 and one which doesn't, unfortunately it seems to be hit and miss as to which one you get, especially when ordering from Deal Extreme.

As for the quality, youtube has killed most of it :(, even in 'HQ' its still nowhere near as sharp as when i first captured it. I was actually really suprised with the quality after i'd done a first test, as i said its in DVD res and pretty sharp considering its only using composite inputs. That 7 minute video was nearly 5gb of raw footage

Youtube always ruins the quality of video`s:mad:

With regards to deal extreme, do they give you the option of which capture card you buy?

If only they did :( No, i've sent them countless emails/tickets since receiving it but had nothing back, so have given up. From reading on youtube, it appears most people get screwed over and like myself end up getting the b&w one, although some do get the decent one. Pot luck i suppose :(

cheers for the FR, I'll accept that when i'm on later but will be on GTA4 tonight

Black and white doesn't really make a difference, it is still cool

It will be good to have someone record my glorious victory in the tourney :rotfl:

Ja5on, have you tried using VirtualDub for capture? It's not that obvious how to use it at first, but it's free, it has loads of different settings, and I've managed to tweak it to get full colour on all my caps.

I can help with a bit of advice if needed, though I'm not very technical; trial and error was what got mine working! I found it after several different gaming/machinima sites recommended it.

Of course, you could always stick with the retro flavour

Cheers Billy, i tried Virtual Dub and had the same issue. Its down to the actual device not being able to handle a PAL60 signal, rather than the software processing it. Its a shame as i had banked on VD being my backup plan should i run into problems :(

:( Shame. Ah well, it was worth a shot! If you ever decide you want to replace your capture device, the one I got is only about £35 from Amazon, I think. It's obviously not HD, but it works well enough for me to be able to do what I want :smashin: Pm me any time.

^^^WOW it records dreams too, I gotta get this software!:D

On a serious note though, we're an AV forum!!! There must be some way to record our games in colour. Everyone else on YouTube do colour why can't we? Surely there's someone who can help us???

Just wondering, is it possible to record 360 footage using a DVD recorder and then rip it onto your pc?

Good thing no one told Naughtyjay I have a HD capture card, mainly because I would not have time to record anything. Other then that, I hope you fix the color problem soon.

You can do that yeah but most dvd recorders can be fussy on picking up the pal60 signal too :(

Nice, i looked at some of those and A - they're too pricey and B - My only machine up to recording in HD is my laptop, which isn't any good lol :(

I have tried this a couple of years ago with a Philips DVD Recorder and there was about 2s worth of lag from the xbox to the T.V, made playing online a nightmare.

Just use a splitter mate, its what i do. split the signal from the xbox, 1 to the TV and 1 to the dvd/capture device. Play on the TV, any lag in display doesn't matter then :)

Out of interest, when you did this what game did you use? (basically was it pal60) and what model dvd recorder was it?

Looked into this quite extensively for the last Tournament. As J has stated the main issue with the COD games is that they run at Pal60 when you xbox is outputting an SD signal. DVD recorders which are compatible with Pal60 are rare and not worth investing in for the sake of one Tourny IMHO. A compatible capture card has the advantage of being able to record buffer meaning there is no chance of you missing anything aslong as whoever is specatating is being mindful to flit between player views or angles etc. You would then be left with a large amount of data which would need to be edited down do a presentable highlights clip. Editing software should be decided on first so that capture can be made in a compatible file type for editing.
The other slightly off the wall suggestion would be to hire a HD DV deck with component video IN and loop through a 1080i signal. Edit is then made direct from the HD DV tapes. Hire cost should be about £50 -£70 over a weekend, although expensive results would be exceptional.

Interesting..... cheers steve, helpful as always

As my easy cap only cost about $8 it seemed a perfect buy and obviously had it worked properly it would have been. I agree, buying a dvd recorder that i'll use once, maybe twice just isn't cost effective. Although my wife's old man has a dvd recorder, so i could play around with that.
I never thought about hiring any equipment but then it comes back to the price issue again.

There is an HD PVR that you can buy, but again is about £150 and its just too much for something i'd use a few times. Maybe when freesat HD takes off it'll be worthwhile, who knows

Lol ! where did you see that. SD only if memory serves but should have a component in/out.

Don't get me wrong I put deck hire out there as an idea but not necessarily a feasible one. If say we organised a HUGE tourny then I would consider volunteering to put together a highlights programme and arranging deck hire and subsequent edits etc. If the capture card was that cheap surely it would be best just to buy a replacement card which can handle Pal 60.

Yeah thats the plan and the intended purpose of this thread, if i get enough interest i'll try my best to hunt down a version that does capture pal60.

i rang my mate and he was talking to me about the ones they had and the connections they used (most of the info went over my head ) there was also a choice of a few hd ones i could borrow (mates rates eg. a pint) but he said something about ybr component rather than just rgb
maybe sellotaping my mobile phone to the chair and recording the screen maybe easier :(
