    Hi,

I have a lovely old Quad 34 / 306 pre/amp combo (and the tuner from the same series too). Currently fed CDs from a Marantz CD52 MkII SE. Linked up to a pair of Gale speakers (from before Richer Sounds(?) bought the brand name (i.e. original Gales)). Sounds lovely!

However... I have a Sonos 5 in the kitchen and currently ripping all my CDs to a Synology NAS as FLAC files.

So now I'm considering introducing connectivity between the NAS and the Quad... There appears lots of options and on the surface the Sonos Connect seems the most logical route to go; however, it's important to me that the Quad setup still sounds good.

As mentioned, I'm using FLAC files; however, I've no idea whether simply using FLAC via a Sonos Connect = good (sound)? I understand CD players - some are better than others - I would "audition" at a shop and choose with my ear. What's the deal with streaming devices - are they all the same?

    Grateful for input and advice!

    Thanks

I'd go with the CONNECT, it's good enough for a 34/306 pairing with the advantage of multi-zone using the PLAY:5

Yes, the multi-zone has big appeal. Thanks.

Would anyone question the rationale of buying a Sonos Connect to "supply" the Quad/Gales vs. buying a Sonos Play 5?

Obviously I have experience of the Play 5 and it sounds great but can only speculate I will enjoy better quality via the Connect/Quad route.

Good though the PLAY:5 is, a proper hi-fi should knock into into a cocked-hat; there's only so much you can do when the speakers are 30cm apart.

I run a music streamer into my Quad stack fine...

As others have said, go for it. I bought a connect first and then added two more play3 and one play1 for multiple room listening.

The general consensus is that the sonos connect delivers bit perfect information, so coupled with a good dac it should be the equal of a high end CD player when streaming lossless. Of course not all agree! Personally I use the dac in the sonos itself and it sounds great to me.

I think the best feature of sonos is how easy it is to use for the whole family, the result is we all listen to more music. I think that matters more than worrying if we are listening to the best possible sound.

OK, bit the bullet and got the Connect. Currently I have it connected to the "CD" analogue inputs on the Quad - is this OK or should I be using some other input?

Would be useful to have it feed into the radio input as that's the default input when the Quad is first switched on. Any problem with that?

    Thanks

AFAIK you'll need to alter the sensitivity of that input on the Quad 34, it's set high for the Quad FM4 so the Sonos might overload unless it's volume was turned right down.

Nothing would be damaged if you connected the Sonos, set it's volume to zero then gradually increased the volume, leaving the 34 volume set at 12 o'clock just to see how it goes.

Just browsing old threads and spotted this update... Slightly confused... The Quad FM4 is a tuner so I don't understand why the CD input (I'm using to connect the Sonos) would be rated for a tuner?

The 301s are quite amazing so I'd love to hear the 401s.
