    Hi folks.

Ok after MUCH deliberation (and probably still a bit more to come)

    1st off.. Background.

I've narrowed my selection of Plasma screen for my home down to one of three, all of which are panasonic. Im selling my Tosh 36zp18 CRT and atacama stands to make space in my room and create a more stylish room. My budget is about £2000 and at the momnet im looking to plug it into my denon 3803/Sky+/Toshiba SD210 player. Although its my intention to upgrade to a 3805 and a new player in the near future. I also have the usual xbox/ps2 sources but so long as they're playable im not that fussed about PQ from them.

    The screens...

    42PWD7 - £1500 including wall mount
    42PE50B - £1950 including wall mount & DVD RAM recorder (ES10)
42PV500B £2400 including wall mount & DVD RAM recorder (ES10)
(All Prices approx to about £30bases on AV-Sales prices)

Have yet to do a side by side comparison but im undecided equally between the three and looking for guidance/oppinions.

The PWD7 wins on price and reputation
The PE50B wins on aesthetic and SD Picture quality
THe PV500B is above budget (hey whats new in AV) but wins on aesthetic, SD & HD Picture quality.

My main question, as yet to be answered, is how does the Picture quality of the 500B compare for SD sources to the other screens. I have no Immeditate intention to upgrade to a HD source but may well be tempted by SKY+HD or whatever they call it, so the HD aspect is not a huge deal for me but good quality SD picture qual is. I do however play with computers a LOT so the 1024x720 resolution is attractive.

Heres hoping you can help me through this decision.

Spent a few hours at my local AV shop watching Gladiator, Free View TV, HD sat. On the following 3 screens.

    Pioneer PDP435-XDE
    Panasonic th-42-pe50
    Panasonic th-50-pv30

First of all the Pioneer looked great with HD picture as did the panny PV, the PE picture from the non HD panny still looked very good( a big suprise)

The panny PV looked better than the pioneer on both dvd play back and free view.

I know this will sound crazy but the cheaper pe50 panny had a better colour depth and a nicer picture than the pioneer for dvd and free view play back !!!!! IMO

As I started this thread i have discovered like most men we all want the latest kit with all bells and whistles.

I dont think i will be going down the road of paying for HD tv when it comes out, I refuse to line the pockets of bsky b any further.
When the HD DVD battle has finished and the price of players have come down, it may become a big issue.

Im holding off my purchase for a few more weeks just to view the panasonic 42 hd screen with my own eyes. My gut feeling at the this time will be the purchase of the TH42-PE50 with stand and free recorder.

Im quite sure that within 2-3 years HD tv will start to become mainstream and Plasma and LCD screens will have advanced so much that what ever I buy now will be old hat. I cant wait for technology all the time, Im just going to buy my TV watch it and enjoy some bloody good movies, cant wait to see on the 42" screen.

    Pulp Fiction
    Goodfellas
    Gladiator (in full)
    Blade Runner
    Matrix
All my starwars and about another 400 movies in my collection that has just been searching for a good reason to watch them all again

Thanks for the comments greyhorse, which i'd already read in a different thread.

Im hoping that someone will have had an opportunity/experience to have viewed all three screens (even if not at the same time).

    Hello all

I am also waiting to look at the new 42PV500B and was previously looking at the PWD7 / PHD7 / XDE, but due to working abroad I've had to delay any purchase. maybe fortunately? :rotfl:

My concern is that if the 42PV500B lives up to its hype/potential how practical will it be to wall mount? This is in relation to attaching cables as Viera's imputs are on the back not at the bottom like the other panels?

Also I will be sitting approx 8/9 feet away so will the 42'' HD set be alot better to the eyes at this distance compared to a 42'' SD set?

    Thank you in advance.

good points retro, and sounds similar to me.

Will be sitting about 10-12 feet away.

I'll want to route the cabling into the wall and plaster over it for a nice tidy finish so it probably doesnt make too much difference to me where the connections are although the bottom might actually be more suitable for my needs as it would make for the shortest amount of trunking.

    A little up-date.......

Popped out to a specialist AV store here in Barcelona in my lunch hour to have a general look around.

Spotted the new SD Viera TH-42PE50 and was really pleasantly surprised with the picture even from a standard ariel feed. Will have to wait till I can get back to the UK to check picture from DVD/Sky etc.

What also struck me was the change in shape from the old Viera as the new models are slimmer and the speakers actually look good IMHO! Gone is the rounded bottom which would have made it stick out further when wall mounting.

All in all its whetted my appetite for viewing the HD 500 series, so roll on May and my return to London

Sounds like exactly the same situation as me, I am going to mount it over the fireplace...
What leads are you going to use, I am shopping around for a decent SCART lead, any suggestions?

The only live sightings of a PV500 in UK is at the all panasonic trade show where they were fed HD over HDMI.......you will need to wait till stock hits to get a proper comparison

    Thanks HD,

Anyone know when the'll actually start hitting the shelves?

I know the dates say 'May' but that could be May 1st, May 31st or even (I hope not) Jun 31st as its still in the same Qtr which is usually the only (if any) guarentee on shipping companies can often give.

I took advice that even thought the window is in shade it is still probably too bright to particuarly stand out (ideally I wanted to to be noticeable from the other side of the street). I have therefore decided to mount it inside the shop area. I had elected to get the PW7D and the only reason I hadnt ordered one is that im still waiting on the insurance policy to be setup and didnt want to take any chances but should be making an order in the next few days, end of next week at the latest.

I have though, recently noticed a price drop on the LG screen at John Lewis to just £1599 inc which with the 5 year warrenty (and the heavy duty life it will get) seems at attractive issue... Will have to commit one way or the other, but most likely not until the day the insurance is sorted.

Thanks for all your help HD, your advice/oppinions on this matter is ALWAYS valued.

given my other thread (asking about wireless connections) I think im going to stick with the PWD7 for the shop. The jury is still out on the choice for home....

Any ideas on how easy it is to unmount/move/remount the PWD7 as im just thinking about ease of moving it about for presentation purposes, guess I should probably look again at those mounts you sugggested before HD.

well 42" weigh in at over 30Kg and are cumbersome to handle (Fujitsu sell some lovely soft carry bags and hard flight cases i assume Panny sell similar ones, (they will fit in a Fujitsu bag) but its not ideal to drag them around, a small PJ and tripod screen is much easier....JoeF, MAW or AV-sales will be able to advise more for commercial use etc
