Just in the process of trying to calibrate my AV2 a little more scientifically and trying to get the test tone going. It says ON but there's no test tone? Any ideas?

I think when I did that I had to up the speaker levels first as it's too quiet otherwise.

Go into the menu and boost then they should be very audible.

Doesn't that defeat the object? I've set the speaker distances approximately but wanted to get things spot on.

It's all relative. You'll just turn up the volume control less when in use to achieve a given level.

Sorted! I'd been missing the step which should have had me pressing 8(down) to get the thing started. It was actually all in the instructions and I should have :rtfm:properly but it wasn't very clear. Well, to me at any rate!!!

I think I missed that step too.

TBH, since I set mine up it's been totally forgotten about, which is something I 'never' did with anything else. Always tweaking.

The AV2 is that good imho.

I have to say that I've been really impressed with the AV2 too. I was expecting a slight improvement on an Arcam AVR300 but it's a much bigger jump in my opinion.

Dialogue is even clearer, the effects are superbly steered and the detail is just phenomenal.

Once I'd set it up, it's so damn easy to use as well. The remote is a doddle - especially compare to the behemoth that comes with the AVR300! Very very impressed with it indeed. Now I'm just wondering whether a DVD5 would be an improvement over a DV79 with HDMI! It'd definitely look prettier!!!

The Naim DVD 5 is supposed to be very impressive indeed on both CD & DVD replay. :)

As DVD5 doesn't have HDMI presumably component would be the way to go and I'd be interested to see if anyone's compared it to a DV79?

It would look so very very very pretty though!!!

I've got one on demo & I think it's good enough to buy, I've had a few Arcams (88+, 89 & 29) & so far this beats them by a mile.

Were you using the 29 with HDMI or another connector?

As I'm using a Panny 5 it was/is component with both the DVD5 & the Arcams.

And a big improvement on the picture? Did you find that there was much improvement sonically?

I'm still playing with it so I haven't played a lot of music yet but so far it sounds good, movies are terrific. Charlie

More interested in movies than music. The DV29 is supposed to be excellent sonically, the DVD 5 must be good then!

Don't get me wrong you won't be disappointed with the Arcams, they are all good especially the 29, it's just in my view the DVD5 does it better (so far).

For me, the DV27a gives a stunning picture via prog scan. Sounds fantastic too.

    However, I would love a DVD5 regardless, because -

    1. It is Naim.
    2. Looks good.
    3. Sounds good.
    4. Great picture.
    5. On screen dispaly link with AV2.
    6. It is Naim.:)

All those are in no particular order and irrelevant of cost if I had the money.

All the reasons you give for wanting one are basically the reason's I'm having one :D , even though it'll leave me skint (but happy).

You don't need to use component connections. The DVD5 has a DVI output and using a DVI to HDMI little convertor, you can put the picture straight into the HDMI input on your screen.

I've got a DV79 at the moment and am really happy with it. But I think that General Skanky and I must have been twins separated at birth as his reasons for looking to change are exactly the same as mine!!! :D

I travel down to Loughborough from Hull fairly regularly so I may just take you up on that offer!!! :hiya:

Any views as to which would be the connection would offer the best picture from the DVD5?

IMHO, I wouldn't worry too much. For me analogue prog scan has always been outstanding. DVI, if you thought it better, wouldn't be leagues ahead.

I'd have thought it would be more down to the practical implementation, ie, which is more suitable for your set up.

There's a DVD5 on eBay at the moment. Put in a fairly derisory bid but its heading up to £1750 now. :(
