Hi - can purchase this player for under £100 from Makro. Am looking at it as a second player. It has stacks of facilities including Mp3 playback/ multi region hack/ 5.1 channel out which I need to hook up to my spare yamaha E492/marantz amp. BUT is it any good . does anybody have any knowledge/experience of this dvd player. Any word gratefully accepted many thanks

The Makro/Naiko is, I gather, identical to the Dansai from Tesco. I bought one on a whim (because it plays MP3s and converts NTSC DVDs to PAL/625/50). It looks and feels cheap, is a bit noisy, but performs quite adequately. Some people have had overheating problems causing lock up. I've run mine now for three periods of 6 hours without incident. Happily plays VCDs, CDRs, MP3s as well as the normal stuff. I'd suggest it is a good buy for those on a severe budget. Easily hacked for every region 1-8 and for region free. Macrovision can easily be defeated, too.

My instinct would be to steer clear: I haven't come across their DVD players, but I've worked in a shop that sold Naiko TVs, and their quality was shockingly bad. Biggest problem was that all the 28-inchers caught fire!!!
