Mid-way through The Fast & The Furious, a sequence starts with a skyward shot of telegraph lines from which two pairs of sneakers are hanging by their laces. The camera pans down to street level revealing a procession of cars.

What’s the point of the sneakers?

Seen it in a couple of films before, people throw them over the power lines, god knows why?

Probably kids nicking them off people for a laugh then throwing them up so they cant be retirieved.

You could always get a big long pole and poke them down - you would probably die in the process though.

What if you used a wooden pole and wore thick rubber shoes

    Possible reasons:

    all of the above and.....

    teenage gang initiation
    celebration of ending virginity
markers for the borders of gang territories
    celebration of high school graduation
good luck thing (ie your wish comes true)
vandalistic attempt to knock down said overhead line
drunken boredom coupled with lack of internet connection

What if the only pair of thick rubber shoes you owned were the ones you were trying to get down.

Lets start the class kids. In America there are a lot of gangs. Gangs = Violence, Violence = death and trainers on an electric line is some mad was of paying respect to the dead by throwing their shoes on the line above where they died. Like in the UK if you see a football shirt or flowers next to a light pole, it usually means someone has died in a car crash at that spot on the road. Same idea kind off.

I saw in The Sun this week a picture of an american teenager involved in a crash, the jeep flipped over 5 times the roof came off and he was thrown 25ft in the air and was hanging on to the phone lines crossing the street.

When they rang and told his father they said his son had been in an accident and "he is hanging on by a thread" . You couldn't make it up.

Plus he was wearing sneakers. Maybe this is how they all get up there! :)

    Anyone else see this?

Saw it yesterday I think, he hit something and the jeep flipped him through the roof and his shoes caught on the wire. Lol.
