Question My Spec Advice

Hi all,

Apologies if this is not the right area to ask this.

I have been given a pc from my brother in law and I just wanted to get your opinion on it.

I'm looking to upgrade some of the components but I have a very basic knowledge of pc/pc gaming.

Could you advise what is good/not, what a good upgrade would be/ future proof a little.

It will be mainly for my son (wants flashing lights ect) who wants to get into streaming / video editing but also something I want to get into also.

Don't really have a budget but don't want to spend thousands but want something decent if I can.

Thanks for your help.

Neil

To be honest with you I would start from scratch. The CPU and GPU both need upgrading to more modern components. What I would say, leave the PC as it is and see if he sticks at streaming.
If you really want to update anything, it would be the GPU first. Without knowing your budget, I would look at something like this:
The 2060 super will run games at 1080p no problem.

Thanks for the reply.

Do you think the current spec will allow him to stream from pc and Xbox and be able to edit using Pro or Divinci?

He wants to use OBS, webcam of himself and a stream deck.

Cheers

Im not into streaming but the 3770 will struggle a lot , your son could/may/might be lucky to stream at 720p with low settings ...
the CPU is 8 years now ( 4 cores 8 threads ) - steaming wasn't a "thing" back when ( or very limited if people were steaming)

does your son/or you have a monitor ? 1080p 1440p 4k

i would hold off thinking about streaming for a little while ... let your son get "into" PC and take it from there ( he might decide after a short while he's not that bothered any more - thus your could be wasting money )

you could buy a second hand GPU as mentioned above which would help the rig preform a bit better
and if worse comes to worse you could sell the GPU and get some money back ..

It will probably stream from a Xbox fine but if streaming from the actual PC he is playing games on then he will take a huge performance hit

I agree with Delvey. I would start from scratch.

A new PC for, let's say £1,000, would obliterate this. Take this system for instance:

Add a second hand RTX 2080 or 2070 (which can be had for about £350 - £400) and you have a mega system for that price!
Need to add RAM
As for spending £350-400 on a GPU, I would hold back until Navi and 3070 get released

I was looking at that thinking what a great deal plus the GPU. Then I realised I'd still have to add RAM and an extra hard drive. Though I suppose the hard drive could get added at a later date.

I'm planning on building a PC around the 3070 and seems impossible to do below the £1100-£1200 mark without making sacrifices.

The Ryzen 5 3600 I would expect to reduce in price when the new line-up comes out, announcement on the 8th next week. I would hope to see new PCUS being sold by November.

Grab a few bits in black Friday and wait until November/December for CPU and GPU and you could hopefully get it all below £1000.

I appreciate all your comments and help.

How would it handle playing Xbox/ps4 but streaming it through the pc to use OBS and a stream deck?

You think it will be ok to do that and so I need an internal/external capture card?

Should be fine. You'll need a capture card
