I have decided to replace my Pioneer mini hifi unit with some better speakers, receiver and a standalone cd player.

Here is what I thought so far:

    WHARFEDALE DIAMOND 8.4 SPEAKERS
    http://www.qed-uk.com/?i=0-VoyC16Diia&vp=6&bg=216&bp=846&bi=0

    PANASONIC SAXR15 RECEIVER
    http://www.qed-uk.com/?i=0-VoyC16Diia&vp=6&bg=212&bp=r15s&bi=0

    WHARFEDALE WCD‑3038 CD PLAYER
    http://www.qed-uk.com/?i=0-VoyC16Diia&vp=6&bg=217&bp=3038s&bi=0

    Total Price = £492

What do yuo think I should change? Will be playing all types of music, might use them for DVDs at a later stage...

I knew, and still basically know very little when it comes to this ... although I decided it was finally time to upgrade my setup. I didn’t really have a large budget for my first time upgrade but I decided I wanted a reasonable amp and some 5.1 speakers. After a bit of looking around I decided to choose the following:

    Sony STRDB790 AV Receiver

    KEF Coda Home Cinema Package

No doubt people would be able to critique it but I'm perfectly happy with it for the price :) I'm really pleased with the Kef speakers too, and the package from Hifi store works out as a fairly good price considering I've seen the fronts alone being sold for close to £400.

Not sure if thats any help to you but don't know much about the components you've chosen :)

Looks nice, although I'm trying to keep to a budget of about £500 unless a extra £100 will make "that" much of a difference..
