After spending two weeks perusing this forum, and various other web sites, I've finally come up with the following shopping list:

    Panny PWD8
    Lumagen VisionDVI
    Denon 1920

I already have a Harmon Kardon amp to sort out the sound, and reasonable speakers.

Does the above sound about right?

I have the 1920 running via HDMI to my LG Plasma.

I have tried all the different upscaling options. 720p and 1080i look amazing. The quality of the player is outstanding. IMO is well worth the outlay!

    drpellypo,

Your research has been good assuming the budget doesn't run to full high def.

Is there much point using that scaler with an SD panel?

I tend to agree with you... Scalers are only noticable with projectors in my opinion ! .. ;)

I dunno about that...(no I really don't know about that)...

but horneydragon\maw do and they'll both tell you that a scaler should be top of your buying list after a plasma - SD or not!

If you go into the DVD Player part of avforums, you'll see that the 1920 has lipsync problems? Or am I wrong on this?

Soz could be wrong on both...just make sure!

Piers - after consideration I decided there was no point in going for true high def as the panel will be just for watching DVD's, and perhaps the occasional freeview - certainly we wouldn't be getting sky or the like. The idea of the scaler would be to improve pq, but also, to act as a media box, as I am wanting to have the panel stealth installed on the chimney breast (not a working fire there anymore - don't worry.)

HD started off being attractive, but after reading stacks and stacks of posts, I realised I'd be paying a lot more for something I'm unlikely to use in the near future.

I have £5 off voucher aat Spec savers PM your addy.......................
I dont personally like the 1920, and your paying for a DVD player that scales and a scaler why? you spend a wee bit more and SDi for the Lumagen and a SDi modded DVD player or stick with a DVD player with good interlaced component outputs HK DVD25 are dead cheap now or even an arcam DV88+ for a little more (S/H)
I wouldnt say your misguided tho the denon is a popular choice and decent DVD decks without HDMI are getting V rare

no i am saying HDMI (High Definition Multimedia Interface) isnt much use with DVD an SD (Standard Definition) source COmponent willl in most cases look as good if not better HDMI for DVD is 99% Marketing BS uness its feding a scaler with 576i/480i i wouldnt bother the forum i full of people remarking n kow new HDMI players look no beter than previous modes with component output its very dependant on the Display some look much better with HDMI (generally because the analogue inputs are naff) many do not look better and some look worse, its a buzz word and it cannot make DVD HiDef............

    PS are you stalking me?

    I see your point...

But maybe now (or when sky finally release HD channels) the time is ripe for the release of Mega test 2.

    PWD8
    PHD8
    PX60
    Hitachi
    Fujitsu
    Pio 436xde
    etc etc...
