I, last Monday, paid via credit card £2700 for a 42" PV 500, 5 year guarantee and EH50 DVD recorder from local Panasonic shop.

That was to match the John Lewis deal.

However, now that JL in the Trafford Centre are doing it for £2249 I would still better off buying that, and would still save money even if I bought the EH50 as well.

So - where do I stand? The PV500 isn't here yet, "might" be here later this week.

IF the shop doesn't want to price match that now - where do I stand? Can I cancel? Am I snookered?

I would imagine I can cancel - just want a bit of advice/ peace of mind...

Try the credit card company first of all. They may know what to do better than either store. Good luck!

Could you just refuse delivery of the goods?

Assuming this was a local sale (i.e. not covered under the distance selling regulations)

Unless the Panasonic shop has a price matching policy (IIRC, they don't usually) then your legal position is clear.

You have arranged and agreed a contract with the retailer for the supply of certain goods at an agreed price. It's not revocable except by mutual agreement. The same goes for the parallel implied contract between you and your credit card issuer for the supply of the goods.

That's not to say the Panasonic shop would refuse to either cancel or sweeten the deal; they may, if you ask. But they are under no legal obligation to do so.

Yes, it's "life" only if you are not willing to fight your corner and ask for an updated price.

I would say within a week is well withing reason.

coupled with the fact that Shop @ Panasonic was willing to match the John Lewis deal - well JL offer a 28 day grace that allows you to claim for any price drops within that time.

That's 28 days after delivery - I don't even have the screen yet.

So - I'll continue to chase it....

    Not true....

The contract has been started, theres no provision for 'goods not here yet so its all right to cancel'...TBH, thats poor advice indeed...

You can cancel, but you'll lose any deposit outright if youve paid it, regardless of personalisation and whether its standard goods or not. Its ordered and youve promised to purchase at said price.

Best bet, hope theyll sweeten the deal....

Then swear under youre breath forever..

I've been advised that it should be here this week, or so. Not an actual date, as such.

I've been onto the shop, and they're waiting on their Sales Director (not sure if that's a stalling tactic) to tell them if they can go ahead.

To be honest, having now researched your rights as a consumer, I am surprised that once you pay for something (regardless if you change your mind/ see it cheaper/ etc) you are still obliged to pay for it - unless the shop allows you to change your mind.

I will, in future, make sure I understand the shops policy on all such things when buying expensive kit.

Hope it’s not a harsh lesson – in saying that it’s only £250 and not a grand. However, I’d still prefer that in my pocket than someone else’s.

i wouldn't be too surprised......it would be pretty hard to run a business if people could just change their mind when they felt like it

    mep,

I agree I don’t think you could run a business either.

However, within reason is the key here.

    The TV isn't with me

The TV isn't with the dealer

The date of delivery can't be advised as yet

Granted if I had the TV, and had it for a number of weeks - hey these things happen. I ain't got it yet.

And, as a further caveat, I was told I was being offered the same 'deal' as John Lewis.

Well, JL give you 28 days grace post purchase should you see your kit anywhere else cheaper.

So - to me, when I was being offered a 'deal' - it was the whole shooting match.

fair enough in that case, but you said you were surprised you had to pay for things once you paid for them.......and actually I do run a business if that was meant to be a dig at me ;-)

    :D

I didn't notice I'd typed it like that - so it wasn't a dig. Funny though.

No - I'm surprised that once you put something on your credit card for example and circumstances change you're stuck.

Unless, of course, the store has a policy like 14 day return etc.

Now, I would expect a shop fronting themselves as a Panasonic retailer to have such benefits.

However, it would appear not - as they've just called me to say they can't match and "I've entered into a contract"

I'm not happy - at all. And I am awaiting a further call.

Well, to be fair to the sales guy in the shop his hands were tied. He kept having to call his Director, which I thought might have been a bluff – obviously not..

After 2 calls telling me they weren't budging, and I was effectively bound to take the good - I advised I wanted the Director to call me directly.

I gave them the full spiel of

    a) I could have bought it cheaper off the 'net
    b) I could have bought if from JL and had their 28 day policy
    c) I came to them, as I thought they'd be V reputable etc.

So - rather than call me, the Director instructed the sales guy to match the deal.

    I now have two choices:

    £2249 for

    42" Plasma
    DMRES10 DVD Recorder
    Bracket
    5 year guarantee on Plasma
    Free delivery

    OR

    £2449 for

    42" Plasma
DMREH50 DVD Recorder (+£200 for this upgrade)
    Bracket
    5 year guarantee on Plasma
    Free delivery

    Which makes me think:

Just take it for £2249, buy the DMREH50 from Digital Direct (or the like, for £280), and then sell the DMRES10

Or is it worth the hassle to do all that?

    Either way, I'm :D

Just to add a foot note to this.....

.......having worked in the retail sector, you are quite within your rights to request a refund if you HAVEN'T taken delivery of the purchase yet. The time between payment and delivery is a 'consideration' period.

And dont let them tell you otherwise!

Can you tell me which panasonic shop gave you the deal? And if they have a specific email address.

    Thanks in advance!
