Almost exactly a year ago, I bought Gone In 60 Secs whilst in New York.

I watched it early this year and then it was filed in my collection.

Last week a friend borrowed it, but complained that it gave a 'parental control' error on his Matsui DVD player.

I immedatly assumed that it was a bug on the Matsui, but when I got it back, I found that I could't play it on my Pioneer 545 either.

On both machines, it plays a short 'Touchstone' logo and then locks up.

I then tried the disk on my old Samsung 709 and it won't even mount...

Finally, I tried it on my PC DVD drive and it can't read it at all.

Looking at the disk, shows so stains ,which look a little like water marks inside the disk.

The disk is clearly faulty, but I don't know how this could happen when it worked OK once.

Does anyone know if there is a way to get R1 disks exchanged? I guess that even if I contacted the distributer in the US, they won't help as it was never destined for the UK.

Does anyone know how this could have happened and what I can do.

I am worried that if its happened on this one disk.. It could happen on any of them.. I don't know about you, but I buy my DVDs because I assumed that they would last forever (well almost).

Has it been exposed to heat, as anything above 70 degrees C can affect the bonding compound of dual layer disc (lower temp if the disc already had a defect).

Try the distributor again and say you brought the disc while you were living in the US, it sometimes works.

Are you sure it's the same disc you leant the friend ?

I think that heat could be key to this.

Bot me and my friend have a Samsung 709.. I have since changed mine for a Pioneer...

But, this disk has only ever been played on the 709..

The problem with that is that the Samsung model always ran hot.. Ever time I watched a film, the disk came out boiling hot..

Not too hot to touch, but to hot for my liking.

It worries me that if this disk has failed, then how many others might too...

I found the number for Buena Vista in the UK.. I am going to give them a go and see what they can do for me.

Can't fault 'Buena Vista' for their service.

Predictably, their UK operation could care about my problem, but they did give me a contact in the US

I sent them a mail and was advised that a 'technician' would contact me.

Then I heard nothing for almost a week..

It turned out that the lady I wrote to went on business and got back yesterday.. Last night I got an email from the 'technician' telling me to give them my address because they are sending me a new copy.. They don't even want my faulty one back.

Looks like they might have seen other examples of this problem before..

I am hopeful that this is just a one-off with this particular batch.. But I am still nervous that that could happen to any disk in my collection.

Still.. Atleast Buena Vista have great customer service!!
