I did some research and it seems that because my TV does not support 1080p, when I set it to 720p, it downscales to 480p! If I set it on 1080i it doesn't downscale, but my blu ray movies look the same in 480p as in 1080i!
My 360 runs at 720p through the DVI, and the HD-DVD's look fantastic!

Anyone know why the 1080i looks so non-hd?

You can't "set the tv to 1080i". You set the PS3 to 1080i. My TV supports 1080i, but the blu ray looks no different in 1080i to 480p.

Set your PS3 to 1080i (in fact just let the PS3 autodetect). Your TV will handle that just fine. For films 1080i and 1080p are the same (since they come from a 24p source).

If bluray looks the same how are you connected. HDMI or composite? Something is definately wrong.

I am connected via component cables, with the switch flicked to HDTV. The "dashboard" runs at 1080i, and my TV says that the blu rays are playing in 1080i. It looks too grainy...

I realise that, thats why I edited my post!
I meant set the PS3 but I am sure you knew that :D
Like I said though what are you watching?

Xmen 3. Looks pants compared to HD-DVD films over VGA.

X men 3 is a poor transfer & is known to be grainy. Try the casino royale trailer.

Funny thing is purists *prefer* the grain because it's on the original masters... personally I hate it.

I didn't consider it might be the film... some of my HD-DVD's don't look very good either. I will d/l the Bond trailer and give that a try. :smashin:

wrong, his tv may not recognise 1080psf properly and may be half res, in which case 1080p is better

however back on topic, try pressing the info button to see if it gets 1080i.
as has been said try a better blu-ray.

what res is your panel?

It says HD ready which means it definately supports 1080i. I'm not sure what they're trying to say on that page.. sure it isn't 1080p native but not many TVs are anyway - and at 32" 1080 vs 768 would be barely noticable.

Did you try the Bond trailer, you should definitely notice a difference between 480p and 1080i.

instead of starting another thread, when playing a blue ray film it gives me all the info when i press the display button on the remote, but it doesnt tell me what the picture is being output at..is there anywhere i can check this for both games and blue ray (just to make it is broadcasting at the right resolution? any thoughts:confused:

That's something your TV will tell you rather than the PS3. Bluray should always be output at 1080i/p anyway - it will be immediately obvious if you're watching it in SD.

I thought that you can't get hi def bluray movies running over component. You have to have a hdmi connection for that.
I believe the PS3 will downscale you high def movie to a lower resolution over component.

EDIT: scrub that. I'm not sure that's valid anymore...

i think that is correct, on my HD-e1 if i use componat i get a message saying high res restricted and it drops to 576p

trying conecting via hdmi or dvi and see if it is better:smashin:

You can display Blu-Ray films just fine through Component at 1080i, you just cant get 1080p when using Component.

The Bond trailer looked SD to me... the TV is definately playing the trailer at 1080i.

I don't know about your particular model of LG television, but when tests were done on the de-interlacing capabilities of tv sets last year LG's faired particularly poorly.

Most seemed to use the bob method of deinterlacing 1080i whereby each 1920x540 field was scaled to the resolution of the panel rather than deinterlacing properly.

If your LG does this then it would not be too surprising that you don't see much improvement in image quality with 1080i over a PAL dvd

Which is why Sony really do need to sort out the 720p bluray issue...

So am I right in thinking if I connect the PS3 via VGA, I won't be able to view Blu rays in HD?

My 360 is currently connected through the VGA and HD-DVD's look fantastic!

So unless Sony let me display Blu rays in 720p, I may as well have a toaster?

I dont think there is a VGA cable for the PS3 so connecting that way might be abit difficult.

I've heard that Sony are going to release an update in the firmware that will allow 720p playback on Blu ray. I can't find anything other than news reports, nothing from Sony though!
If they don't sort it my PS3 will be going on Ebay lol
