    Hello all,

I'm new to the forums and am looking for some of your expert advice on the following list of kit for my future HTPC build. I've never built one before so be gentle with me ;) Oh, and most of the components listed are from recommends I've noticed within these forums, so I'm hoping it looks good :)

    HTPC
    ----
    Antec Overture case
    Epox 8KDA3J S754 motherboard
    Sempron 3100+ S754 (SDA3100BABOX)
    2 x 256MB Corsair Value Select (VS512MBKIT400)
    Gigabyte 6600GT 128MB AGP VIVO
    Maxtor 250GB SATA
    NEC 3520 silver
    Hauppauge WinTV PVR250 USB
    MS Cordless keyboard/mouse
    WinXP MCE 2005
    MCE Remote

    LCD TV
    ------
    Viewsonic N3000W 30"

    Thanks for any advice.

    Hi :hiya:

No real concerns there, I'd personally go for a Seagate Barracuda drive as IMX they're less prone to 'whine' than Maxtors. Apart from that then there appears to be enough CPU power for most things you're likely to want to do and the case is certainly very nice. I don't see a CPU, does one come with the case, I can't remember?

Sempron 3100+ is my CPU ;)
Thanks for the reply and tip on the hard drive. I'll wait for a few more replies before I start purchasing kit :)

I'd get an Athlon 3200 Winchester to be honest, excellent CPU! Unless the Sempron is a lot cheaper, not sure what the difference is to be honest without looking. Oh and if you do get the 3200 Winchester you'll need a socket 939 motherboard, plenty around now, Asus or Gigabyte are good. Also get a PVR150MCE, it's a newer version of the PVR250, why have you gone for a USB PVR250 by the way and not a PCI one?

    Cheers
    Andy

    lol, OK ;)

The overture case comes with a prefitted 380W PSU, so that should be fine for my setup.

I've also amended the TV card to the aforementioned PVR150MCE PCI.

    Any more tips ?

Can't comment in TV cards, I don't have one, good choice of memory (good brand and 512Mb is perfectly adequate for HTPC duties) and a DVD drive I'd recommend. For the rest I can't really comment having never researched a Sempron system, the Gigabayte is a nice card if you're going 6600GT .. and MCE 2005 is nice if you're after an easy-to-use front-end.

All in all a good base system .. and one with plenty of upgrade potential. ;)

Not sure about HTCP, but a HTPC is a Home Theatre PC. ;)

i,ve just gone for an asus A8N-SLI and a 64bit 3500 winchester with 1gb of ddr corsair mem - bundle from scan.

I use this with a sli xfx 6600 graphic card.

It runs full YUV WMR9 renderless and plays ts files so smoothly now via theatertek 2. Even 1080p films only average 25-30% cpu load, so huge headroom.

Best upgrade i've even done, had to buy a new psu with the required NVIDIA dedicated vga molex, P4 4pin and the new 24pin eatx mobo connector, but all said and done a massive spec board. Loaded windows MCE2005 no prob - even asked for the mobo disk half way though on to anew 300gb sata drive.

Been rock soild since I built it last week.

Depends on your budget and what you are doing with it

I am still vaccilating between a spec like this and a really low spec that still runs HTPC - diskless probably.
Have just priced a similar spec for htpc plus general PC duties. Gigabyte fanless 6600GT, two 250 gig segate barracuda ncq disks, an LG multi-format dvd writer and an LG DVD rom. prolite e431S screen (have one on another pc at home and its great tomy eye). not sureon case and PSU but will overspec them as I exect to get 10 years out of a case and PSU (do probably a 600+ watt moster psu an largish case).
Tv/catpture card - probably the nebula but will wait a while.
pushes 1100-1200 sponds with this spec. odds are I will still build a low cost htpc diskless box to play (with a linux distrib/front end) to go in the living room.
was going to stay away from MCE and just run XP pro and a few linux bootable systems (Suse, Knoppix and geexBox).
a couple of hours to build the box, couple more to install all the operating systems - and then a day and half customising winXP to make it safe (and sensible) for net use. Its that last bit that putting me off !

point being - I think a lot of people are coming up with this spec as a good 'cross' machine. Upgradeable and capable.
