My new Pioneer VSX-AX5Ai-S has arrived.

First impressions are wow, what a machine. Seriously heavy and well built. Well designed and it will look nice on my AV rack. The rear of the machine is far more user friendly than previous amps I may have owned - it certainly looks like £1K's worth of AV gear.

As half way through my house move I have connected my i-pod to it which will not sound great.

Sounds fine so far though not quite as smooth as my Denon 2805. Mmmmm, slightly alarming but I will tweak this mother so no worries yet.

When sorted I will post some pictures of it in situ and update my opinion on the sound from DVD etc via my 868 (when that arrives too  )

Any advice on set up from fellow owners would be welcome. Ta :hiya: :

    Cheers,

    Captain Benefit.

Congrats Cappy! Can I just ask why you upgraded over the Denon 2805? The Denon is quite a good amp in its own right, was it purely to link to the 868 via i-link?

A couple of reasons to be honest.

The i-link is one. Two is that I like my gear to match tonally where possible and I had a good offer for the 2805 when I tentatively advertised it here. I was kind of loath to let it go as the 2805 is a fantastic machine for the money, especially when set up correctly and with the equalizer set to front.

I did not expect to spend quite so much but I figured lets make this the last amp I buy for a while yet!!!!!

    Cap :)

I was planning on buying the same amp at the end of last year. A brilliant amp and imo has the edge over the Denon 3805.

Hmmm, I’ll hold you to that!

Captain, I too have just got this amp. I received it last Friday in fact. Superb amp. It's massive isn't it although as you say it is well built and the design is great. Looks stunning on my AV stand. I also like the learning remote that comes with the amp which again seems well built and works well.

As for setup I used the auto setup funtionality which really worked very well in my opinion and it achieved great results. The sound from DVDs, and from the Sky+ which I have also hooked up with an optical cable, is stunning.

By the way what cable did you use to connect your iPod? I might give that a go at some point.

I connected my i-pod via a 3.5 Ixos mini jack lead that I bought for just £5.00 in the bargain bucket at the Bristol show.

    HTH.

Be the way, mini jack to left and right phono/RCA.

You can buy them anywhere tbh. Dixons, currys etal. £5.00 was a bargain when you consider that the apple leads are £20.00 -£30.00!!!

1000 tracks at the finger tips via high end AV. Superb!!!!

    Enjoy.

    Hi,

I to got my ax5ai last week and very happy with it, I upgraded from the 2011. If it was not the I link, I like they sound the same. The I link does pull out or reveal extra detail. I also think it looks superb together with the 868. Stereo wise, I think it's great :smashin:

Where can I find the i-link cable???

I thought that I would get one with either my 868 or the X5.

    Cheers,

    Captain Benefit.

I'm not really an audiophile, so I let the auto-setup via microphone do all the work. I'm using it with a 7.1 Canton speaker setup, and basically leave it in THX cinema mode on all inputs, DVD, TiVo, SKy+, X-Box, which utilises the 7.1 speakers from 5.1,6.1 soundtracks. I barely listen to music so couldn't advise on that. The only niggle I've found is that the Master Audio Delay is set across the whole amp, whereas I would prefer to set it for each input, as sometimes the lag between audio and external video processing is different depending on source.

By using a plasma via scaler for video source I'm seeing an average of 2 fps lip-sync, which is why I needed to ensure te Pio had the delay facility.
