my new lg set today audio so confused!!

hi ok ,, i got my new 47lg today /home cinema.
the home cinema 5.1 is so good ,, breathtaking
BUT!!! WHAT HAS CONFUSED ME is when say i put on sky ( as a example or use my techomate ) the sound ONLY comes from the television it self!!
is it meant to be like that!! or when i get my sky hd receiver next week, would the sound via a optical lead produce sound in the speakers!!! the dvd player says optical in on it >>>>??

when you get SKy HD you can 'bypass' the TV's optical output and just use the putput from the SKY HD box. if you have a 'normal' sky box right now you'll just need to connect the home cinema system to it using the two red phono connections...

the sky guy is installing a hd box monday ,, i just hope he is a clever guy!!! ( u know what i mean)
