Hi guys, a few pics of my 5.1.4 setup all done myself..

So started here when we moved into the house 2yr ago, was a corner set up (not ideal) and running a 5.1.2 monitor audio apex system with svs sb2000 sub and denon avrx4400, TV is sony 55a1 oled now currently on the wall in my kitchen..

I decided the fireplace had to go to make a proper placement setup with tv on the wall, wanted a TV feature wall with tv unit built in...

Build began on the TV wall, had to get the gas pipe capped and plasterer to finish..

Recessed the tv for a flush finish and also behind the av unit to allow space for amp and cables..

Av unit is the ikea besta in black with glass black doors and glass black top, attached to TV wall and also sat on a timber frame to support weight!

New TV ordered a Sony 65 a8h oled and new LCR Arendal 1723s tower and centre also got an emotiva amp for front 3...

Got a couple of ac infinity fans and rear of av unit is open keeping everything cool..

Ended up recently getting a svs sb4000 which is much better than my old sb2000, I've got a small thread in subwoofers which you can read to see how I got to the sb4000..

Finished the timber frame under av unit with black woodgrain exterior PVC soffit and new sub in place, finally I'm really happy with the results and it sounds awesome...

Pics of the 4 ceiling speakers, they're kef ci160qr with fire hoods, getting speaker cables to these was the hardest part of this build, had to go down the wall behind, as seen in one of the pics had to cut holes in the wall to feed wire down!
Not optimal being so close to rear wall but eq has done a great job and they sound fantastic I'm really happy with the sound

I really love what you have achieved there Gaz - great handiwork. It all just fits in so well. It is certainly a big improvement over what you had before - bet it sounds great and sure gives me something to aspire to! Having said that, it does look like you made the most of your previously compromised setup.

I have a similarly compromised corner setup and I would be interested to hear what your front heights sounded like in your corner setup? What speakers were they?

Cheers, Mark

Hi Mark,

Thanks, yeah I'm really happy with the results, it's a much cleaner look and we've actually gained more space in the room even with the bigger speakers..

Tbh the corner setup sounded good, much better than the tv and previously the sound bar, the receiver did a good job with eq and I never really knew what I was missing until the new setup which is more in line with dolby specs for speaker placement..

The front heights were apex a10s, same all round, they did improve the front sound stage making it sound much bigger and were a good improvement over 5.1 even as a corner setup, that said if it's atmos you're more interested in they're not a patch on overhead in ceiling although again it's not a fair comparison as I'm now running 4 in ceiling atmos.

If at all possible a well laid out room with proper speaker placement will always sound better than a compromised setup.
My advice for anyone reading this is good speaker placement within dolby specs if possible.

Cheers Gaz

I like the clean setup. I have a question do the ceiling speaks cause excessive noise in the room above?

Thanks! Yeah when watching loud the sound does travel directly above.. not so much of an issue for us though as its our bedroom and don't tend to listen loud when the kids are in bed..

I have ended up keeping my svs sb2000 and placed it near field next to MLP, now running 5.2.4 the second sub has made a massive difference to the bass, it's much more even around the room, digs loads deeper with a lot more impact, overall very happy I decided to keep it 👌

Also now had shutter blinds fitted to all windows, makes a big difference blocking out light and sound outside..

Next upgrade will be arendal surrounds going on wall in place of the apex 10s to run all arendal base layer speakers 👍

Another small update,

My new black 1961 surrounds arrived yesterday, took only a week though they was in stock, I must say the build quality is very impressive for the price, the drivers look fantastic with the rubber surround although I'll be running them with grills on, they do look really nice in the flesh and bigger than I expected, im really happy with the purchase..

The 1723s surrounds wouldn't fit so I got the 1961 thinking it would be the best compromise, although I don't think it will be going from reviews and first impressions..

I won't be putting them on the wall for a while the impending price increase pushed me to order them sooner!

I'll let you guys know how they integrate with the 1723s LCR once I've got some hours through them

I'll update with pics once they're on the wall

Enjoy your weekend 🍻

Update;

Now put the 1961 surrounds on the wall and buried the speaker wire, I've actually run the surrounds and ceiling speaker cables in wall to a speaker outlet plate, 1 for left and 1 for right, 3 channel face plates..

I've also moved the subs both now hidden front and rear to keep the Mrs happy! Although I've got a very similar response in the new positions..

The 1961 surrounds are an instant improvement over the apex 10s with a much improved sound field and more dynamic, the overall sound is much improved 👍

Check out the pics, some before and afters..

Really clean setup there Gaz and really envious of the svs subs 😃. They probably sound awesome. Appreciate the effort it takes to hide the cables but worth it in the end

Thanks, yeah the subs do sound good, they blend very well together (at least to my ears!) Certainly helped even out the bass.. 👍
