Let's see if we can make a nice pair of holes in the ceiling and not ruin it at this stage!
I'm rubbish with a jigsaw so chain drilled them and finished the cutout with a Dremel. Took forever but the cutouts were perfect
Time for colour.
Chose the darkest colour I could live with whilst still keeping the room looking 'normal' for when the kids just wanna chill in there.
Wanted to be able to restore the room back to normal if/when I moved house so kept the window and made up a wooden frame and covered it in blackout material. Eventually it will be sided with more blue plasterboard but for now it's been put up as shown
Any updates dude? How have you positioned your rear surround speakers? I am having an interesting discussion over on the 'speakers' pages re my home cinema garage !!
Will get a few more posts in this evening if I get a chance fella. Been snowed under with work commitments
I positioned for 7.1.2 but also added cabling for 2 "high effect" speakers in the front top two corners just in case.
If you look at the first couple of pics you'll see I placed the rear two in the back corners of the room but angled towards the seating position. The 2 side speakers are directly in line with the seating position and the front are the front. I asked many questions and didn't get many answers so just did the research and went for it. The result is most satisfactory however I'm still waiting on getting an Atmos ready amp to see how well that worked out with the 2 ceiling speakers. 4 was just too much for me as I'd need to pre-out to another amp to get all the outputs. The room just doesn't feel big enough to warrant it. Personal choice of course
My home cinema garage is about 10 years old, and I still have the 5.1 but with large boxy monitor audio speakers. My rear surrounds are not ideally placed (see this thread - 5.1.4 - would you do it? | AVForums ) and I am going to try and experiment a little. I have plans for the room, which will include possibly vinyl wrapping the speakers in a black or dark grey finish, new receiver, projector and screen, and small hifi component rack on screen wall so centre speaker can sit atop it.
Ps is your sofa back against the rear wall of the room, or forward of it?
I would say I did (and have still got in the lounge now) the KEF Q series range of speakers that were BIG and I just couldn't get them to work in the constraints of the new room. They wouldn't fit with seating included, across the room so I went for those smaller wall mounted items that don't take up too much width in the room. I kept the Q55 floorstanders for the front Left and Right channels as can be seen in the pics.
The benefit of CAD to lay the room out with models of each item was, I have to say, invaluable
Was easy when you start from scratch so I just found some smaller speakers to use whilst maintaining sound quality if that makes sense? With a sub, I don't really miss anything from having the larger speakers so it's worked out well.
