I upgraded my V2 box just before Christmas. Used a 250 GB Maxtor Diamond plus 9. Dropped it straight in, no formatting or mods. Worked a treat! Drive failed completely last week though. May have been just bad luck, but I suspect overheating may have caused it. I intend to add extra cooling fans now.
Incidently, just to get it working again, I dropped in a 120GB Seagate Barracuda straight out of my computer - NTFS formatted with windows etc. installed. Worked fine.

I've been using a 200GB version of that drive for about 6 months, no problems. I guess you may have been unlucky.
