My DOOM3 PC

Just for a bit of fun, thought I would post this. I have had the same yahoo mail address for over 20 years and turns out there are still old mails that I stuck in a folder and forgot about. One of the oldest was this order from Scan for the rig I built in 2004. (We just called them ‘PCs’ back in those days). This was mostly for the release of DOOM3, which I was really excited for, and as I recall this ran it pretty well, although it was a bit of a system killer.

This was a huge spend for me at the time, I had been saving for ages, but this build lasted me for a good many years. Intel had faster CPUs, but AMD were the value winners and as good then as they are now for allowing new parts to run in the same socket, so I was able to upgrade the CPU several times before I replaced it completely. It was the AGP mother board that was the final nail in the coffin as PCI-E came out not long after this, after a few years there was no possibility to upgrade GPU without a new motherboard.

The system worked well though, and the Gainward 6800GT was a decent factory OC card, and looked killer, with a stunning red PCB, though I remember it was horrendously noisy when it fired up.

Also that CPU cooler was a thing of beauty with UV LEDs that made the top cover glow (for no good reason since windowed cases weren’t really a thing), but it looked good when you cracked the case open.

I was Intel only after this build until my new PC earlier this year which has brought me back to AMD at last.

2004 was the last PC I built before the current one, only for Half-Life 2. II had a 3.2GHz Pentium 4, 2 Hitachi Deathstars in a RAID0 setup (needless to say one died) and a Galaxy 6800GT:

Nice card there. That’s an Arctic cooler on it. I got one of those about 6 months later to try to silence the beast, and it worked pretty well, I think.

My first build was this...

CHIEFTEC MATRIX (Green)
LANPARTY NFII ULTRA - B
AMD ATHLON XP-M 2500+ (MOBILE UNLOCKED)
THERMALTAKE VOLCANO 12
CORSAIR 1GB PC3200 (2x512)
MAXTOR DIAMOND MAX 120GB 8MB CACHE
MSI DR8-A2 DVD+/-/R/RW (Black)
APLS 1.44 FDD (Black)
HERCULES 3D PROPHET 9800 PRO 128MB
4x ZALMAN 80mm CASE FANS

Total price - £660 Inc VAT
Also includes delivery.

Overclocked the hell out of it and stripped the 9800 Pro and added custom cooling and flashed to an XT bios. Was a great first build!

Just reading old threads and posts from another forum I used back in the day and I upgraded the Athlon to AMD64 the same year. I spent a lot of money and was ocing lots lol

Seemed to, I was only about 21 at the time I bult it and it was overclocked it's whole life without issue. Lived until I eventually discarded the whole system. Got sucked into console-only from the Xbox 360 and now coming back to PC after all these years!
