went to look at the new nec vr5,there was the vr5 the hires version the panny 6 and the hitachi 5200 all 42inch,i was dissapointed with the nec vr5 and will not be buying it the hires version was better but out of all of them the panny i thought was the best and smoothest picture, the hitachi was very good through dvi but i found the brightness and black level a bit poor the nec bezel i thought was dreadful very cheap feeling plastic dont get me wrong the black level was good colours were ok just didnt have that cinema feeling like the panny, anyway i ended up buying the sanyo z3 projector and am amazed at how good it is i think i would consider the panny 42 pw7 if they can get the hdmi sorted out

    Hi Andy,

Did you have a play at all with the NEC picture settings? Just wondering as the screen had only been there a couple of days and Kevin told me that no-one had spent any time fine-tuning the picture. Could have explained why it looked so bad? Also, the panny had been in there for a few months and isn't the picture meant to be better with time?

Sadly this is my opinion exactly, it's really OK, just doesn't set the world on fire. However, another option for all you 720/50 on digital input searchers has reared it's head. Fujitsu have said their new 40 series panels will be HDMI1.1 compliant. As the input is 'part of the screen' not like panasonic's weak little get out clause, I think they must be telling the truth. But only time will tell. They are due within the next 4 weeks.

Nothing yet, the US models are on the website, but rec. prices are in dollars, and no tax. We get stung 14% tariff for HDMI, and then VAT on top of all. I'm guessing in line with the current crop of hi res screens though, It appears all the 40 series, VHA, HHA and 50XHA will carry the HDMI interface, but not the commercial models.

No, the 50 is Panasonic glass, 1366/768. The uk model will not be exactly the same, but I am assured they will be HDMI, which SHOULD mean 720/50 as it's part of the 1.1 spec. They take it on YUV, so must on HDMI accoring to the rules.

In the usual manner of plasma prices, I'd expect a measurable drop from current pricing, though of course there may be a little distortion at present with 30's and 31's knocked out cheap.
