This is getting panned elsewhere (1/5 in the Guardian). I’m normally a fan of Duncan Jones work so will check it out still.

Do we know if this movie has HDR support on Netflix?

I'm still looking forward to watching it despite the fact that it's getting battered left right and centre by critics...

Definitely Dolby Vision (just checked on my iPhone).

According to IMDB it has a 4K DI too, so it should look good at least.

Thanks Cas, though "Damning with *feint* praise" did make me spit some beer out, involuntarily. I'll check this out on Netflix.

I was hoping this would be great but the reviews have been brutal. Could be the next straight to Netflix stinker after The Cloverfield Paradox.

I really hope Alex Garland's Annihilation is good.

Not the epic disaster I thought it would be, but it definitely wasn't very good. 5/10

As a huge fan of Moon, I was pretty disappointed with this. I felt the first half could have done with being mute as the script was so bad. Even the great Clint Mansell’s score felt a bit phoned in.

      Fingers crossed for Annihilation

Well that wasn't good. Very little happened for the first hour and when things did happen it was a by the numbers missing person/criminal underworld story with pointless scifi window dressing.

3/10 from me. It was weak.

And why was the main character mute? It was a pointless gimmick.

I quite enjoyed it, I took it as a low budget type of indie Sci-fi & it was very different and had some interesting stuff going on, its a bit messy and flawed but had me hooked nonetheless 6/10

I agree that the mute/Amish thing appeared to be an unnecessary gimmick.

I’d have probably preferred a Black Mirror-style tale focussing instead on Rudd and Theroux.

Movie was solid but started out a little slow. Had the main character been a normal person, it would have still been good. It didn't rreally add anything to the movie too much. The hdr was good and the picture was nice.

Have to agree with Cas and the points he highlights in his review - 6/10 from me. AV presentation was decent.

Seems to me Netflix is the dumping ground for poor new films...Bright, Cloverfield and now this hope that new Portman film doesn't continue the trend.

While I agree with your sentiments about the overall quality of the movie, I found the mute & Amish characterisation interesting... It shows that our protagonist is out of pace in this near futuristic world, in the sense that he is spiritual in his way of life, despite suffering by becoming mute for it, whereas the world is materialistic and cynical...
It is this non-material mode of being that is part of his appeal to Naadirah and which raises their bond beyond that of convenient coupling...

It's not enough to elevate the film beyond it's TV movie nature... In particular Paul Rudd's hispter criminal felt very TV for some reason... The kind of antagonist we'd find in a stoner comedy...

I wonder if it was made for Netflix or bought...

Watched this last night and to be honest it was very disappointing, seemed to just drag on for quite a while, and it never kept me engrossed which was a pity as I had high hopes of this. Seems for once the reviews were right.

Thought the idea behind it all in principle was solid, but the movie itself was a complete mess - disjointed and dragged on pointlessly. Not remotely in the same league as Moon.

I very rarely switch a movie off before it ends - perhaps 2 movies in the last decade - but this one I really couldn't be bothered to sit all the way through. Cloverfield Paradox was bad, but imo this was worse!

Annihilation is seemingly getting bad initial reviews too, although I'm still watching it on day 1 out of optimism for Garland / Ex Machina, in the same way that I watched this one because of Moon (and Abrams / Cloverfield, and Ayer / Bright - think there's a Netflix pattern here...)

Wonder how many big budget B movies Netflix can commission before it starts to affect their subscriber numbers!

I thought this had awful pacing and for large parts was just outright dull.

Is Duncan Jones turning into a one hit wonder (although Source Code was good- so maybe two hit wonder!!) like Tobe Hooper? What a waste of time...

I wish there was something in the review to tell me this was a follow up to Moon. I think the author of it has clearly missed this out;)

Having just watched this I'm struggling to understand the negativity. Personally I thoroughly enjoyed the movie. I've been avoiding The Cloverfield Paradox, maybe I need to give this a try, although the horror that was Life has been putting me off watching this.

Watched this with a m8 last night. We both thought it good and does not deserve the h8 it’s been getting. I was fully engrossed throughout.
      A strong 3/5
      Will watch it again.
