I have the opportunity to buy the above on a good deal (circa 30% off :D ) but wondered what your views might be.

They are the new limited edition ones (links to both on homepage: http://www.musicalfidelity.com/mf/index.jsp)

Plenty of power and v good quality, including valve outputs on CD (which I am led to believe is good - spot the noob! :hiya: )

Anyway all opinions would be great!

    Cheers

    B

Hi there, looks like I'm following you round :)

I haven't heard the A5's yet, hope to at xmas. According to MF they're better than the 308's for less cash. 30% seems like a cracking deal and if they are better than the 308 stuff then you're onto a winner. However from a few comments I've read they are not as good as MF say, anyway I won't be swapping my 308 system for them just yet :)

If you are looking for alternatives to demo then have a listen a few very different sounding systems, suggest:

    Naim CD5x/112x/150x (try adding flatcaps/hicaps)
    Cyrus CD8x/PSX-R/8vs/PSX-R
    Arcan Diva / FMJ
Rega Jupiter/Cursa/Exon/Exon (try some Rega speakers)
    Quad 99CD-P/909/909

Heard a horror story about Cyrus and there customer support (or extreme lack of) so a little put off by them, will investigate other suggestions tho. Thanks all!

Naim watts are different to other watts! :) :)

Seriously, try to hear them and have a look here :

The FMJ range is best, CD33/A32 integrated.

C30/P1 pre / power worth a look, heard it at a show and wasn't bowled over but may suit the 22L's.

You need to demo all the products in you're set out budget and that should keep things nice and easy even though there maybe quite a few just listen to them and you will soon find what you like!

The A5 CD is ok, a bit too bright for my liking, it also has a bug where you need to turn the whole unit off as it crashes when you load a CD. The amp is damn plain awful - bright, sloppy bass, distorts at 12 O'clock and that isn't that loud, has a tinny sound to the upper mids. It has a smooth un-gritty sound but it's soundstage is bad. Vocals sound like your singing into a bottle. It's basically a A308 with cost cutting on various componants. It sounds like a cheap Marantz amp. You'll find it very hard to find cables and speakers to match the A5's.

The 909 and 99pre is a good combo. Sounds good on most speakers and has a lot of power.

I myself have both the A5's and Quad systems, I much prefer the Quad, just my opinion.

Cyrus tend to break down, and when they do it's next to hard to get them repaired. Their customer services are bad. They sound decent enough though.

Oh, and whoever is giving you the 30% off the A5's, they need their account closing. You're not allowed to give discount on MF equipment. MF enforce an RRP as they are classed as a Cottage Industry.
