This is a long shot but has anyone got a R2 copy of this they can comment on? I was planning to buy this from Play.com but they have 2 R2 versions - one for £3-99 with no technical info whatsoever, and a 2002 Anchor bay release for £6-99 with 5.1. You'd think this would be the logical choice but I read a review (DVD compare?) that said some of the swearing had been dubbed out and the picture quality was bad. Any info on either version greatly appreciated; I seem to remember this film from years ago as a good adaptation of a good book, with O'Toole at his best.

I don't know if either of the R2 versions are anamorphic widescreen or not, but I have the R1 version which definitely is. It's only in mono but it is perfectly acceptable, as is the picture quality.

I pre-ordered the Anchor Bay version when it first came out.

The opening titles are in widescreen, but then the picture zooms in as if it was on t.v.

So I wouldn't bother with this version.

I give them the thumbs up - they're not necessarily the quickest, but they're reliable, cheap, and I'vre always found customer service very helpful and effective when they were needed. :smashin:
