multiroom: how often do the boxes phone home

Hi

This is not another "is the phone line needed post", I have searched for the info Im asking for below but had no luck.

I have recently upgraded to skyhd (its should be installed in the next hour or so). This is in the first lounge, and box is connected to the phone line already.

I was hoping to take out multiroom next month, but unfortunately have the common issue of getting a phone line to the second box. Though the second lounge has a phone socket its at the opposite end of the room to our TT. The room is small, but there is no way to get the phone line neatly from one side to the other (there is a door in the way in either direction so can't run it around either side - standards set by the women in the house).

I can of course run a cable across the room, and so was wondering if anyone knows the protocol of how/when the sky boxes phone home. If possible I wouldn't mind running the cable once a month, and manually getting the box to phone home. Is this possible? Can I initiate the phone home? How often does it have to happen?

Alternatively do these wireless phone line extenders work with Sky HD? I have heard people claim they do, and others that they don't.

Many thanks!

As the Terms and conditions state "... Each box you have must be connected to the same fixed telephone line at all times..", it is a random call which could be at any time, but usually AFAIK once a month.

The easiest/safest way is with a DECT extender and as Satcure sell them they must be effective:)

Just to clarify, my understanding is that Sky call in (obviously automatically) and interrogate the box, usually each month.

It's not the box that initiates the call randomly.

Is this correct, please?

AFAIK the call is made by Sky *to* the box
but
there seem to be ways of forcing a 'callback' See post 7 here

However, I doubt if this would work long term with Multiroom otherwise everybody would be doing it:eek:

Thanks for the clarification, although I'm a little confused by the link.

I've had to prefix with 1470 because my number is withheld, but I'm also ex-directory (not that I'm paranoid, of course ;)) and that's the first I've heard of the 142 prefix.

One more question...

I've had the SkyHD installed and connected across the room.

I have purchased the wireless phone line extension kit from Maplin (called Wireless PhoneJack). I wanted to know how to initiate/test the phone connection to see if it works before I order multiroom.

Does anyone know how in the skyhd (and sky plus if possible) menus you can check the phone line status?

Thanks

On HD: Settings/Signal - second page.

I think for both, if you disconnect from the mains and reconnect, it will tell you if your phone line is not connected.
