My PC at home is used to support my 40g ipod. My g/f will be moving in next year, and currently has an ipod mini - but will be losing her pc which she runs her itunes off.

So - is it possible to have 2 different versions of itunes on the one pc - or will we have to upload her songs to the PC, copy across to my itunes and manually dowload to each of our ipods when we want to transfer songs?

You can't have two copies. You can have two libraries, but you'd have to edit the preferences to swap between the two.

Alternatively, use one library, and use playlists to manage to two sets of songs - then just tell iTunes to only sync selected playlists onto each iPod.

Cheers....all a bit new to this. When I look at preferences on mine I see no selection of library. But do I first need to select all of my songs and then use the consolidate library option?

Then load hers up, select those and consolidate again

Edit > Preferences. Go to the advanced tab and you can pick your library location. This would let you swap between two.

Would seriously recommend using playlists instead though. A lot easier.

Depending on what OS you're running you may want to set up another user and have seperate libraries.
My partner and I decided to have one big library under my account, but if she logs on as herself iTunes has it's own library under My Documents>My Music (Windows XP at Home).
No idea about Mac or 2000

I was wanting to have 2 separate libraries, one ripped AAC 192 for the ipod and the other possibly in lossless for use in the house. I assume I should be able to do this with different logon accounts ?

As has been posted elsewhere, you can simply rip everything lossless, then convert to AAC (now you've got two of everyting), then use a playlist based on bitrate to select the ones to synchronize with the ipod(s), and the ones to play through your sound card/hifi.

It is also possible to share libraries between multiple users with judicious use of aliases and permissions. And of course to keep them on a server if that's what you want. I haven't done this yet, but I am planning it for when another ipod may perhaps move in at christmas.

    Hi guys,

Just to let you know about a pretty cool tool to manage multiple iTunes libraries on one PC:

    iLibs http://www.copypod.net/ilibs.php

It rules and their email support is damn fast!

One thing that hasn't been mentioned is what you lose if you do not use different user accounts.

One of the best features of itunes and the ipod is the use of play counters and your personal ratings. An example is with podcasts where you can arrange to only sync podcasts with a play count of 0. If you share the same user account you share the counters and ratings etc.

You also need to bear in mind that you can deleting songs from your itunes library does not neccessarly remove them from your harddisk.

This becomes very important if you share you library with teenage daughters.:)
