Are there any very involving multiplayer war games? I'm thinking along the lines of Medal of Honour etc. but I found the mentioned not to have too much character involvement and that really, it was every man for himself.

Are there any good games in this genre which rely heavily on co-operation and teamwork, much in the same way the real war was fought?

Call of Duty is a good Half-Life mod.
    Battlefield 1942 is excellent.
Return to Castle Wolfenstein has a very fun online mode.

You can also look at World War II Online, this is the most realistic online war game and contrary to popular belief was the first to take MMO games into FPS realms (not Planetside!).

Joint operations:Typhoon rising is an online multiplayer war game with huge maps and up to 150 people playing at any one time. It's set in recent times with todays conventional weapons and vehicles. You have various character classes depending on how you wish to play (medic, sniper, engineer, gunner etc). You can play as a team with other players or be a lone gunman if you wish. There are various game types AAS- advance and secure, TDM- Team deathmatch, TKOTH- Team king of the hill and COOP.
This game has a lot off variety and is very enjoyable imo.

If you want to try before you buy then there is a full functioning demo of one map (there are loads) and restricted weapons and vehicles but gives you a very good flavour of what the game is about. I thoroughly recomend this game :smashin:

    ....what he said

The only thing I found though was I soon found the official Nova servers annoying with the flashing wedges on your map to indicate where enemy fire is coming from.Ive moved onto smaller clan servers now, which still allow 64 players and is far more enjoyable!

    2 favourite servers:
    KIA
Come get sum (with friendly fire on,a lot more interesting ;) )

I hear there is no subscription for J.O, therefore I've begun to download the demo. Hopefully I'll be playing it by Sunday.

we sometimes use teamspeak which allows you to decide which servers to use and tactics during gameplay. It takes the whole experience to another level and adds to the enjoyment of playing as a team:) You can download TS here:-

Or from Teamspeak.net if I'm not mistaken. I've been using that program for years in co-op with Flight Simulator when I fly online.

    Have a look at Planetside.

It's subscription only, but IMHO this gives you a higher player to pratt ratio.

And it has some of the best team / squad based co-operation of any game available IMHO.

Are you up for a game today then? Let me know the time and your gamer tag and I'll do a search and find the server you are playing on and join you. We can go and kick some butt together if you wish

I played Planetside from beta and it is pretty good.I had a break from it for 6 months then went back for more, but lasted only 2 weeks cos once I tried Joint Ops,Planetside was back on the shelf(JO really is that good ;) )

My only problem with Planetside is what you actually get for your subscription  I used to justify paying the monthly sub by saying it was paying for constant support from the devs, constant bug fixes and new content and huge battles which you couldnt get on normal servers......well,in the time I played the new content was practically non existant(although they have actually just made some major changes which are supposed to be pretty good),there was a multitude of bugs which went unfixed along with some infuriating lag issues and of course along came Joint Ops which offers servers with 150 players, land, sea and air vehicles and no monthly sub :lesson:

All that said I still have PS on the shelf and will go back to it at some point,it provided great entertainment for months and in the far distant future when I get bored with HL2 I might have another look :p

    Hawklord,

Got a problem. The download is finished et al but when I try to load it, the video test cannot run becaue my graphics card does not support Hardware Transform & Lighting. Never even heard of it before.

Anyway, it's an nVidia Riva TNT2 64mb (yes, I know...) and I cannot find any old drivers that support HW T&L. Any ideas as to what I can do?

I don't want to accept defeat before I even joined the war.

Your videocard is too old, you will need to upgrade to a newer video card.

If you are trying to play Joint Operations it does require a decent spec set-up, so you may find that your PC is too slow to run it. What are the other specs of your components?

'Tis a 1.6gHz machine with 512mb RAM, plenty of HD space, no sound card either as of yet - still looking for a good one to get.

I've been looking at updating but don't see myself willing to spend £100 on a graphics card.

They recommend a 2.4Ghz CPU for Joint Operations, with the minimum being 1.2.

I don't think a budget card will help you out enough, even though it will drastically improve the performance of your PC over a Riva TNT 2.

It would be expensive to get the game running I reckon :(

You still could look at Half Life mod Day of Defeat, that should run ok on your PC.
