Multimedia PC has display problem...any ideas welcome

Hi,

I have a problem, with displaying white on my monitor and TV. For example, the Explorer window, which is mainly white, is correct across most of the display. But at both sides of the screen, about 1 1/2 inches wide from top to the bottom of the screen. There is a slight Pinkish tone.

I have had this problem, since I built the PC, but assumed it was the monitor at fault.

Since turning my PC into a multimedia PC, I have found this has not true. As the same Pinkish tone is also displayed on the TV. And it’s made much worse, as it tends to burn the screen (although it seems to recover after switching of for a few seconds)

The motherboard did have on-board graphics, but I have bought a radeon 9550 AGP card and this shows the exact same fault. So it's not the graphic card either. My MOBO is an Asrock K7S41.

Any ideas as to what is the problem? As I can't think what the problem could be.

Regards,

Gary

From what you say, it sounds like this problem affects both the TV and the monitor? In which case, it is probably something else. The first thing I might try, is attaching something else to the TV, like a VCR, to see if the same thing happens when viewing a white scene. If it does, then the problem could be due to something external, like the speakers being too close to the screen (speakers are magnetic, and this can affect CRT displays). Also look for other sources of magnetism, like power cables. Maybe move the display to somewhere else in the room, and see if it still happens.

It seems unlikely that the PC is the cause, because it happens with both the onboard graphics and the radeon. Nevertheless, how are you attaching the PC to the display - are you using straight VGA, or VGA to Scart, or something else? Are you able to move the cable so that the video cable is far away from any other cables, speakers, etc. and does that make any difference? What kind of display(s) are we talking here? Different display types have different issues.

sounds like magnetic interference if its happening on both screens?

try moving speakers/magnets/cables around and see if the pink area moves around or anything.

= yes thats correct

= Works ok with everything else vcr dvd etc. (I have tried it on two separate TVs, I have also tried lead that came with the radeon and is only 1 foot long, and still gave pinkish tones. The TVs are in different rooms, so rules out magnetism leads etc?

PC to the display - are you using straight VGA = yes
TV = composite rca also tried s-video

Has me stumped it almost seems as though the motherboard is causing the fault, but the Asrock K7S41 is very very popular, so?

I cannot think of any reason why a motherboard would cause this kind of problem. I don't think it is that. My money is still on magnetism of some kind, but I admit it is bizarre. I would definitely recommend physically moving devices around - maybe it's the PC's power supply or something. Other than that, I can't think of anything.

I have seen this kind of thing once before, but in that case, it was entirely a fault with a new TV (however that brand of TV was susceptible to it, apparently).

How near is the AV amp to the TV?

I had a problem similar to this on a tv with a blue patch which would come and go, eventually I found out it was the AV amp on the shelf below.

very strange

Does degaussing the monitor change the pinkish tone at all?

No. as the monitor deguass on each start up

Is there a software tool that informs me what freq im driving TV at, as I am relying on ATI catalyst, it says its doing PAL(I) 50 hz, could it be that its not right?

Ive tried though more things on TV, but made no difference, and noticed that after 2 mins left screen is light blueish and right is pinkish, and they persist if you change to normal TV program for about 10 secs?

The effect im seeing as if you were looking at the picture through an hazey oily coating.

Any ideas?
