    I have a sony 336 dvd player - standard region2.

I want to convert it to multi region.

    What are the potential pitfalls.
I have heard that some discs will refuse if it detects multi region (i.e region 0)

Also whats better - automatic region setting or manaul and whats the main difference.

Do you know of any places which upgrade to multi region and how much it cost.

    Cheers

None if you get the mod done from a competent company. Software mods seem more reliable than remote/chip mods.

You are refering to RCE, the mods disable this function.

Automatic is regarded as the best.
The difference, automatic, the player changes region settings for you, manual option you change it yourself.

    Hope this helps.

    pitfalls:
some cheap sony auto only mods can't play RCE discs.
You normally lose the warranty (some mod companies give you new one, but be careful they sometimes only cover the mod failing and not the player failing)

    manual or auto:
most sony mods are either auto only or manual and auto.
The cheaper ones will be auto only (so make sure it's RCE compatable).
The more expensive mods are manual and automatic, so normally you would leave it in auto and if you get a problem disc you can use manual region.

Mods don't set players to a region 0. They either automatically detect what region the disk is you're trying to play and switch to the correct region, or you manually switch it yourself.

It's the region free players, which don't conform to any region at all, that are mostly effected by RCE, which just checks that it is being played on a player switched to R1. Automatic mods usually work fine with RCE, and almost always manual mods do.

    In my experience anyhow.

After daring to get slightly technical, I'm ready for the flood of contradictions to follow:
