Muffled sound on a Philips LCD flat screen

I'm hoping someone might be able to answer a question about a problem we're having with our television's sound. We have a less-than-a-year-old Philips flat screen LCD television (model 23PF5320/28). It is hooked up to our Comcast cable box (Scientific Atlanta is the brand, Comcast the cable provider) and a four-year-old Philips DVD recorder (model DVDR75/17). We've tried connecting these things by two methods: by co-ax cable (we've tried both daisy-chained from wall to box to DVD to TV and also connecting the cable box and DVD player individually to the TV by co-ax) and alternately by composite cable (red/yellow/white plugs to corresponding outlets) from the cable box and by component cable (red/green/blue plugs to corresponding outlets) from the DVD player. With the co-ax cable, the picture is a lower quality than we would like, but the stereo sound is crystal clear. With the box and DVD connected by composite and component, though, the picture is better but the sound is fuzzy and muffled, making voices impossible to understand. Do you have any idea why this would be the case? We've triple-checked that everything is connected at the right places, and as I said, the sound is audible, just very low quality. We would think that any kind of compositing would improve the sound, not make it worse. Oh, and we've also checked the television's audio settings: while there is a menu item on the television's audio settings menu for "stereo," which ought to give us the option of choosing stereo or mono, that option is grayed out unless we use the co-axial cable to connect everything.

So does this sound like a problem with the TV itself, a problem with our settings, a problem with the way it's hooked up...? Any ideas from the experts?
