It will be available on Sky HD eventually at some point. We'll have to wait and see.

By the content Viacom HD would of possibly been a better choice or a new brand totally.

But still MTV is thee brand or was.

don't the majority of Europe use astra 19 degree's (that Sky analogue used to use)?
therefore they'd need to broadcast it to different satellite for us to get it on SkyHD

I've emailed asking anyway, they're usually quite good at replying (to me anyway)

So why would that stop the channel being broadcast here? Surely it would be possible for it to be broadcast from anywhere in Europe, as it would be in the Astra footprint? Isn't it just a matter of using Sky for the EPG?

I dont think I would get this as I dont have the Music and Kids mix.

I dont care about music much as I just have the radio on most of the time.

Of course it would be within the Astra 2's footprint but the majority of European homes use Hotbird at 13e (All of Poland's and Italy's channels here) and the rest on Astra 1 at 19.2e.

Does this mean that there's a chance that at last music videos may standardize the aspect ratio they're filmed and broadcast in?

For years now pop video directors have used a whole range of non-standard 'arty farty' aspect ratio for gimmicky effect than anything else.

Films, TV progs and even ads stick to standards, so why can't the music industry?

Hopefully a true 16:9 HD aspect ratio may encourage them to do so.

Fair comment, but I just can't realistically see MTV ignoring the UK HD user base and only broadcasting HD content to the rest of Europe. It wouldn't make sense, would it?

    Depends.
The economics of a pan-european service which is uplinked from a country other than the UK with it's picky OFCOM and ASA oversight may be profitable where as a UK specific service (at this time) may not be.
We've seen the "value" of the music channels has fallen over the years with the MTV family getting less and less from both SKY and Cable in carriage deals thanks partly to the appeal of the jukebox type music channels.

That said I wouldn't be surprised to see SKY do a deal for a MTV HD channel if they had exclusivity and covered the bulk of the costs in terms of capacity and uplinking.

Maybe so, but my money is on an MTV HD service being made available to the UK when it's launched. We'll have to wait and see.

That would mean a Polish and UK broadcast licence then.

I'd love to see MTV HD. The (picture) quality of the stuff on there at the moment is quite horrific.

Is there actually anything worth watching on that channel these days anyway? It's all bad reality shows isn't it? (And I say that as a big fan of good reality TV!) I can't remember the last time I saw a music video on there!

It would be a totally seperate UK specific channel which complied with our standards in terms of advertising, content and watershed etc something which which I would imagine is very different to Poland and other Central/Eastern European nations let alone the Western half of the continent.

Interesting, does that mean that the foreign news channels are UK specific too? Or are there separate regs for news and entertainment channels?

I don't really know in regards to news/entertainment regulations but UK news channels/programming has traditionally been given far more leeway in terms of content than entertainment channels and of course OFCOM mostly acts on complaints from the public barring a major breach of code. FOX News on the SKY EPG is tweaked to comply with UK advertising regs as is CNN and FOX has been hit by OFCOM for breach of standards so UK specific rules can apply when a channel is broadcast on a UK platform.

Any channel that can be picked up in the UK by an individual but uplinked from overseas is under no threat from UK regulators (XXX porn lives for that loophole) however if it is included in a UK service (SKY, VM etc) then it has to live with oversight to a certain degree.

I don´t think that it will be available for continatal europe only because it will be an English language service and either the UK is the biggest hdtv market in europe.

King of Sat says testing now. I can see this being added to Sky HD before year end.

It will be part of the £10 HD sub, so you'll get it regardless of what individual mixes you take.
