Any recommendations for sites to download MP3 files, legally, preferably UK based, and minimising virus risk?

Why do you have preference for a UK based on-line retailer?

I would recommend that given choice you opt for WMA file download rather than MP3 as this would give you higher quality audio for the same file size.

I use www.allofmp3.com. They charge approx $.01 per megabyte and give choice of download format. You pay $14 for 1,400MB of downloaded music using credit card via paypal.

AFAIK, there's zero virus risk with downloading MP3s (legal or otherwise) unless you're downloading an executable to run/retrieve the files. There was a potential buffer overrun issue with older versions of Winamp and Windows a few months back that affected MP3 files, but they quickly patched it.

http://www.mp3.com is free and legal, and has a decent selection of stuff from unsigned bands. You've got to sign up to a mailing list to download, but feel free to give them a bogus addy. :D
