Probably going to win award for thickest person in here today, but here goes ...

Want to get a DVD reader/rewriter - don't mind if it's external, btw - so I can archive MP3s and other music files. So, two questions:

    1) What on earth should I be looking for, spec-wise

    and

    2) Is it possible to back-up MP3s to a DVD? Will they work?

Go on - let me have it ... :suicide:

Sure. Treat DVDs like a external HD. If anything happens to your PC HD, get the songs back from your DVD

As for a DVD player...faster speeds doesn't mean best - there is a greater chance of a error. About middle 16x is OK

Dual layer = 8+ gb of data, but DL discs are more expensive than normal ones

If you're clever, buy a external HD instead or cheapest brand 40-60gb player and use that. Then you can have your music in lossless

Cheers for that. I was somehow under the impression DVD-R/RW could only be used for image-based files.
