Many years ago i watched a B&W possibly 50's adventure/mild horror,in which a ship ended up on a strange island which was ruled by a boy who was guided by a Spanish Inquisition type priest & included a man eating seaweed monster. Anyone?

Found this on IMDB but its in colour and wrong decade:

    The Lost Continent (1968)

This film starts out like the Love Boat on acid, as a cast of varied characters, with various issues, take Captain Eric Portman's leaky cargo ship to escape their troubles. When a violent storm strikes, the ship is swept into the Sargasso Sea and our heroes find themselves trapped on an island of man-eating seaweed, populated by giant monster crabs and some Spanish conquistadors who think the Inquisition is still on. Features songs and music by '60s "cool group", the Peddlers.

Silentone is right, it can only be The Lost Continent, one of the most bizarre and yet also one of the most underrated Hammer films. One of it's weirder visuals is that the inhabitants of the island make their way across the water with the help of helium filled ballons. It was one of three Hammer films based on a Dennis Wheatley novel.

It's out on DVD in the US and in Germany.I believe a Blu-ray is planned as part of the Hammer film releases.
