Can someone please help sort out a heated work discussion :-

The mouth of Sauron scene was added for the extended edition, so who gave Gandalf Frodo's mithril shirt in the theatrical release ?

I didn't notice Gandalf having it in the Theatrical edition. Are you sure he did?

    Cheers

In the theatrical version, the Mithril suit is not seen again after the ork and the Uruk-hai start fighting over it's ownership whilst Frodo lies bound on the floor at the top of the tower.

Pretty much the same as we don't see gandalf's staff again for no apparent reason. When in the extended edition we see the witch king destroys it.

How come the mithril shirt didn't provide protection against Shelob?

Or am I missing something???

I can only assume that Shelob got him in the leg or arm. Can't actually remember from the book if it specifed where he got stung.

Can I someone clarify what exactly is the 'Mouth of Sauron' scene ? I've watched the EE twice now, but both times I caught myself nodding off and now I'm thinking that I've slept through a few scenes.

The 'mouth of sauron' scene is where they are all standing at the black gate after the major battle and it opens and some evil nastylooking thing on a horse comes out and talks to Aragorn, the thing then throws Frodo's ringy vest to Gandalf, thus making them all think Frodo is dead. I think the creature is the 'mouth of sauron'. Then Aragorn chops its head off!

Ah yes, I've seen that scene- I thought it might have been a scene which actually had Sauron in it.

I suppose that raises the question that if Sauron knew it was Frodo's shirt then he also knew how close Frodo was to mount Doom, so why did he fall for Aragorn's plan to draw all the Orcs out to ease Frodo's passage to Mt. Doom.

Perhaps Sauron thought he was dead??

Also the originally filmed version of the 'Mouth of Sauron' scene did actually have Sauron in it, but they didn't like it so removed Sauron and replaced him with the big troll thing. When Aragorn is fighting that he is actually fighting Sauron.

Pretty much this is all based on the fact that Sauron could not envisage anyone wanting to destroy the ring, he assumed that Frodo/Sam were simply spies and not the ring bearer.

Hello. Don't have the book here in front of me but it says something to the effect that Frodo was stung on the lower left back of the neck (it isn't mentioned until Sam finds him in the tower), which would be above the neclkline of the mithril shirt. The movie is pretty ambiguous about it though.

In the book Frodo was stabbed in the neck by Shelob. Too graphic for the film methinks?

Sauron doesn't actually appear at the end of the book either. I would have liked to see Sauron at the end but possibly they removed any Sauron scene in order to stay faithful to the book.

yes, they didn't show Sauron because Peter Jackson no doubt values his life. You should see the anger from hundreds of lotr geeks (yes, I am one) who have gone absolutely potty over the WK breaking gandalf's staff. (although I'm not too bothered by this). Now just imagine that PJ DID show the Sauron/Aragorn scene, and you would have thousands of geeks descending on Wellington to finish PJ off, whether or not he has a massive Gorilla to protect him ;)
