I see this a lot on the motorways and used to think this was down to traffic conditions or other things, but on a quiet journey the other morning I'm just left a bit bemused.
Taking my mum to Gatwick airport at 2.30am on Tuesday I travel down the A12, M25 and M3. As you can imagine, there's not a great deal of traffic on the roads. On the M25 I approach a car that is in lane 2, I'm sitting at 72mph on cruise control in lane 1. I pull in to lane 2, then in to lane 3 and pass the car. As I get just in front, he increases his speed and is now sitting about 1-2ft behind me. I can't pull back in front of him so I speed up a little to create more room, pull in to lane 2 and then back across to lane 1. As I do this, the guy decides to accelerate quite fast until he gets stuck behind another car in lane 2, then slows and stays there meaning I catch up again, still sitting at the constant 72mph on cruise control
Coming back home on the M3 another car did exactly the same thing. I approach at a constant speed, overtake, pull back in and then they accelerate past until they hit more traffic and then slow down again.
Why do people do this? It's almost as though you've just woken them up and they realise they're travelling slower than other cars.
