Just bought a Mordaunt Short Premiere set from Peter Tyson very recently; excellent speakers and great customer service.

Unfortunately I experienced a problem with the MS308 sub which emitted a fairly loud humming noise even when freestanding and not connected to the amp (Denon 2106) so not a ground-loop issue. Humming level increased when phase set to 180. Returned to Peter Tyson who tested and confirmed the issue however tried a few other MS308's which did the same thing so a replacement MS308 is not an option for me.

My problem is that both my wife and son have hearing problems - oversensitivity to noise (hyper-acusis) so I need a quiet room and don't want to have to turn the sub off every time we are using it.

I'm considering alternative options - number 1 on my list being the MS309 however don't want to suffer the same problems. I'd appreciate feedback from any MS309 owners regarding whether you have any "humming" issues with your sub.

    Thanks

Delighted with my MS309 and not a hint of a hum. It's connected to a Denon 2805 and performs extremely well. Hope this is of some help to you.

308's can hum with certain amps due to earthing issues. The 309 isn't affected.

Mr Scarlett- has your CD made an appearance?

Thanks Tons of Fun - the MS308 hummed without even being connected to my Denon 2106; is this an issue that affects the MS309 at all (you work for MS don't you?). I'd go for the MS309 but don't want to experience the same issue.

my 308 doesn't hum, but i doubt that helps.

By the way, when i bought my 308 (impulse buy) i was told they had run out of 309s but the 308 was pretty much the same with less power and 2 inches less driver. I asked if it looked the same and he said yeah (i love that continuous driver design). I wasn't happy when i got it home, and they dont allow for returns of subs in case i just got it for a party and drove the pants off it

Tons of fun, how much would a 308 be worth second hand? mint condish.

PS sorry for hijacking thread :)

Do a search for MS308 on EBay - one auction isn't finished yet and the price (latest actual bid) is sitting at £100.
