does anyone know if the region 1 version has the dts soundtrack on it?
it is on the region 2 version in the setup menu but it is not advertised on the box

Yes it does have DTS as I have listened to it, and to be honest I can't really tell any difference to it and the DD soundtrack.

I agree with Nick23 not a huge difference between DTS & the DD5.1 - both are ES & EX respectively & the sound in this mode is excellent IMO
Another plus for the R2 is there is a "sound effects only" mode which although sounds a bit "geeky" is actually quite enlightening - not sure if I would sit through the whole movie in this mode ...
