I have just sold my B&W CDM9NTs and am now considering a pair of Acoustic Energy AE1 Mk3s and an MJ Acoustics Reference 1 subwoofer. Does anybody her have any experience of either of these products and if so what do you think of them? I would also appreciate any other suggestons of Pro Monitors and Subwoofers. Thanks.

I think I've mentioned SVS on another thread, they are NOT subwoofers, they are ordinary speakers without tweeters. The US do not understand the priciples of subsonics. If you don't believe me then look at the freqency response of REL and MJ Acoustics subwoofers versus all that the Us has to offer.

No agenda, just a keen eye for specifications, and also the fact I work in the Hi-Fi industry.

Crustyloafer as something of an amateur subwoofer enthusiast with no connections to the industry i have made a mental note to never ever buy anything on your recommendation, i have owned or lived in close approximation to pretty much each and every Rel as well as many many other commercial subs and can only ask one question of you:
Are you in the right job?

As a dealer within the industry you should KNOW that on paper specs with subwoofers are, in 90% of examples flattering to say the least.

What exactly about the specifications favours REL & MJ Acoustics over, say, Velodyne, SVS, Martin Logan, and other top American subwoofer manufacturers..? How are REL's & MJ's subs' frequency responses better than those of American subs?

With the exception of a few high end and well built brands like ATC and Martin Logan etc. most of the american subs that are mentioned on here are units such as SVS. If you look at the SVS website, even their top end model has a lowest frequency reponse of 16Hz, whereas a vast majority of UK based subs go lower than that with ease.

Just had a look at the Velodyne website, there are no particularly impressive looking products there either.

Yes your right. Have you also considered Japanese subs - Sony and Kenwood make some decent on paper stuff too.

I'm sorry for being so critical of all these other models, it's difficult not to be biased when then specs look so poor for all the non uk subs. I'm sure there are some very good ones from other manufacturers but I have yet to see any that even look like they might be good, let alone sound good. If some of you guys that have already got subs can genuinely reccommend something better than the MJ Acoustics Rerference 1 for the money then I'll look into it.

Fella, that has to be one of the most ridiculous things I've ever heard.

I'll give you the benefit of the doubt and assume you missed the DD-18 specs:

Anechoic frequency response of 14Hz +/-3dB and less than 0.5%distortion.

No REL or MJA can get anywhere near that.

The previous HGS18 was just as impressive - have a good read of this review:

    http://www.hometheaterhifi.com/volume_6_4/velodyne-hgs-18-subwoofer.html

It's one of the best there is. Period.

    Matt.

I presume you actually understand the difference between "on-paper" specs quoted at -10db (Yamaha) -6db (Rel) and others that quote at -3 or even -2db for the Servo15 (which is an extremely tough set of figures - if you go by figures)

Clearly an M.J. Acoustic sub would suit you (and Mr. M.J Acoustics) just fine.
Leave the SVS/Servo's/Velodynes for us "morons" you clearly have not a clue.

Honestly and without any malice do you know (or ever heard) just how low 16hz is? Let alone 10hz and below. "Hearing"??? a 10hz tone at over 100db's is quite honestly (along with being burgled whilst present) one of the very few times where i have felt considerable unease.

    Regards (maybe)
