I just need a speaker package to complete my set up (Marantz 7010 DVD, Denon 3802). Has anybody got a Monitor Audio silver package? The reviews seem inconsistent e.g. HCC rate the 5i package whilst HFC doesn't and some of the reviews on audioreview.com refer to a lack of bass. Similarly HCC didn't rate the 8i package whilst other mags (WHF)do. The HCC review also contains stars for the 8i package for a subwoofer when there wasn't one in the test and talk about 5i rears but I think they mean 3i's!!

Anyone listened to these side by side who can add an opinion?

    Thanks <img src="rolleyes.gif" border="0">

I'm currently helping a friend build up a home cinema.
I am looking at a set of the silver series(5i,10i, fxi) to go with the new Denon 2802. I have heard this setup(with a sub) with a Denon 3801. It was at a HiFi show, but it still sounded great. We are going to do another demo of this setup(without the sub) on the 2801(2802 if they can get one). We will decide afterword whether he needs a sub. If it was me, I would get one, but he may not be bothered. It's going in relatively small room in a new house. A sub might shake the house to bits.

    Hi Gazzer,

The problem with this question is that most respondees will be MA Silver owners ! (like me)

It's hard to be objective as I'm very happy with MA Silver speakers. I have the 9i's, 12i centre, FXi rears x2 (+ Rel Storm sub).

I think it's a very detailed and punchy sound. The centre is probably the weakest link. Some people find them a bit bright and they need loads of running in. The FXi's sound much better in bipole than dipole.

My only point of reference is my previous speakers - B+W 603's Series 1 - bass too ploddy and boomy and Revox standmounters - too polite for movies.

The silver range floorstaders are definitely fussy about placement with respect to the walls. They really need to be at least 18" from the rear wall and as far from sidewalls as possible. Play around with position to tune the bass to your taste.

FYI - when I emailed Monitor Audio for an amp recommendation they chose the AV10SE as a partnering amp for the silver range. I think the Denon "smoothness" goes well with the MA punchiness.

For what's it's worth a HCC review sumamrised as "Impressive, aggressive and yet capable of great delicacy. These are for audiophiles with a hooligan streak. I like them a lot.". The package got 5 stars..

The only valid recommendation is to try them at home for a weekend in your living room with your taste in movies/music and your amp. Speakers are VERY subjective

    Have fun
    Gary

Thanks for the info guys. I will be getting the 8i package next week hopefully when our next lot of visitors bring them out from the UK.

    Cheers ;)

I too have the 9i's, 12i centre and Fxi surrounds, these are powered by an Arcam DV88 DVD and AVR100 reciever. I also have a Tsunami sub.

They are a very bright sounding speaker but as the Arcam has quite a warm sound, I think they go very well together. Of course they settle down as you run them in...

I must say I disagree that the centre is the weakest link...as it is on the bright side I find that speech is up front and clear, and the fact that you have two 6.5 inch drivers (and 2 x front ports) means that it is not short of bass either.

My next upgrade will be to bi-amp the front 3 speakers, add a high end CD player and upgrade my sub to a REL.
