I want some speakers that will produce bass which you can feel in your stomach, but the problem I have is that the room they are in is not that big.
I have MA 703 PMCs at the moment (connected to oldish Arcam Alpha 8R and 8P amps) and I'm quite happy with them except for that really low down bass that I'm after.
Can I produce the bass that I want without it overpowering the room?
Is there other makes of high end speakers that can do this for me, but not cost the earth?
As the new RS series has come out, I see that Hifibitz are selling the S6 for £399 which is a very good price.
Would I notice much of difference between the GR20 and S6.
The answer is yes I suppose, but would the difference be much?
I will have a demo, but I just want to know what you guys think.

Is it best to upgrade the amps aswell, to the latest Arcams?

So many questions I know :D

What are the MA surround speakers like. I want to get some 'Dipole' speakers. Do MA do them?

If you don't notice a difference between the GR20 and S6 then I'd give up or get the cheaper ones. I have some new GR10's and they are amazing, if I want extra bass then then sub is switched on :)

Have a look at www.monitoraudio.com, they do SFX series of speakers to match each range. The Golds are pricey though.....as you'd expect.

To be honest there isn't a huge amount of difference between the S6 and GR20's. The 20's have a little more control over bass and a slightly bigger mid and slightly smoother treble. On the wrong equipment you'll struggle to tell the difference. It's not that the GR20's are bad it's that the S6's are so good.
Summary: The GR20's are better - Slightly.

So for £400 the S6 seem very good.
I want to buy so much at the moment, it's just deciding which to go for first.
I'm buying a new car in the next week or so, and then I want to get the new Denon AVR 2601; new speakers all round...........
I suppose it would be best to get the speakers first before they are difficult to get hold of (if they aren't all ready).

Don't delay on the S6. New stocks at low prices are running down, as the RS6 (cosmetic upgrade) has superseded it.

    I only think the S6 / RS6 are too much for a 2106...

    Another quick question.
    Frequency Response +/- 3dB 38Hz - 30KHz
Which of the above tells you how low the bass goes?

I think the RS6 is more than a cosmetic upgrade though and may allow the Gold range to step up too.

I own the Silver S6 series. I got them 2 weeks ago. great prices on them now as well -if you van find them. For eg at RS they only sold them in Warm Beach. You could pay more to get them in another colour.

Anyway, my room is 18 x 12 feet. But it houses my dining table as well, being an apartment. So it distorts the layout. None the less, I haven't gone above 0dB yet but without the foam plugs these things really move air!

I have them about a foot from the wall. The closer to the wall the more boom. They will be going closer to the wall I suspect once I start getting an av cabinet and furniture! (it's a new aprt)

I am not tremendously technical but I'd be delighted to answer any q's I can answer.

    cheers
    Darren

the 30Hz to 38Khz is the bass. I only know because I've just bought the FB-100 (fast bass 100) subwoofer by Monitor Audio as well. It's supplies are running low as well. I got mine for 500 euro. It goes down to 24Khz I think, which means it plays a useful purpose. The asw-100 (from the bronze range) or the 360 radius (radius range) don't touch that bass at all. You'll hear bass -but like you said YO WONT FEEL IT>

anyway, i was going to add the Radius 360 to my S6's but it is not a match. The bass response of the S6 is superior, therefore I had to buy a much more expensive sub.

The Radius range is cosmetically compact but you need the 5.1 setup to reproduce what you're loooking for. The floor standers just don't pack much bass and they really do need to be paired with the sub 360. Whereas on your AV amp, you could for the time being (while saving up again) divert subwoofer frequencies to the S6 which will handle them fine giving you 5.0 sound not 5.1

    all of this IMHO.
    Cheers
    Darren

I've ordered the S6 online (in black though).
I would have preferred to have them in rosemah but they are impossible to get.
    Still at £380 I'm happy.
    Should be delivered tomorrow.
I know I should have had a home demo of these, but I don't think I will be disappointed.
The only thing I'm worried about is if the speakers will produce too much boomy bass for my smallish room.
They will be about half a metre from all walls, so should be alright.
I can always fit the bungs (I think that's what they are called).
    Can't wait.
Yes, I'm getting a bit excited. I always am when I'm getting some new equipment :)

It's the frequency response. 38Hz is a touch lower than the bottom note of a 4-string electric bass in standard tune, and is low enough for general music use. 30kHz is higher than you can hear: 20kHz is about the absolute limit, and CDs don't contain information above 22kHz.

The bungs are very good at taming the bass. If memory serves I had them out 1.5 feet from the rear walls and I used the bungs in the top ports.
They do take a while to loosen up and sound a bit scratchy for the first few hours. Don't worry this soon fades.

    @Troon.

Ooops, That clears it up, sorry i see now it is the entire range of the speaker. Thats what I was trying to ellucidate re: the sub woofers going lower than the 38Hz.

Bottom line, you're going to love them. Wonderful speakers.

I was lucky to get the MA Silver 6s.
I phoned up the seller of these speakers and they said they had black in stock, so I ordred.
Got a phone a little later saying that they weren't black after all but oak.
Cancelled that order, and had a look at Hifibitz, but had sold out, but I did manage to get a warm beech pair for £370 delivered. Even cheaper than I was going to pay :)
Should get them next week some time.
    Can't wait.
