Modem problem- where do I start?

My friend has a problem with his internet access, and I'm stumped so if anyone can suggest anything to try he'd appreciate it.

He has a Tiny (I know) desktop PC. Internet access was fine until sunday when it just won't connect.
He uses a dialup connection, and the modem is working OK according to the troubleshooter, and the driver has not been changed.
Plugging a phone into his line works fine, so there is signal at least as far as the PC.
There is no dialtone detected, and yes, the speakers are switched on.
No leads had been disconnected, nor had the PC been moved. It just stopped working.
Could the modem be faulty anyway, or is there something I'm missing?

You may want to post this in the Entertainment Computers and Components forum - due to it's technical nature. You'll get more responses.:)
