I was thinking of getting the MJ Acoustics Pro 50 sub, since it's so highly rated by the hi-fi press, and, more importantly, the AV Forum.

I understand that for £50 extra I can get the newer MJ Acoustics Ref 100, with 120 watt amp in a box with the same dimensions. Does anyone have any experience of it? I thought it would be better than the Pro 50, but I've just read a review of it in this month's Essential Home Cinema magazine where they only gave it 2 stars! The Pro 50 seemed to be 5 stars in all the mags, so I'm wondering whether I'd be better off getting one of those?

    Hi Sunil
I think wilber and dan gleebles off this forum have heard the mj subs and wilber preffered the ref 100 to the pro50 which he bought.I would take what the mags say with a pinch of salt and try and get a demo and make your own mind up.

Ditto. I was impressed by the Pro 50 and can't imagine the Ref 100 being anything other than a solid improvement over it's very capable, less powerful brother.

In fact, I actually had one on order for a while but cancelled.

The MJ 100 is most definately worth the £50 extra.

As for star ratings in most of our UK rags, I wouldn't worry too much Sunil. Most of these guys don't know the difference between a banana plug and a spark plug.

Thanks for the advice guys. I'll try to arrange some demos. Just wanted to make sure I wasn't missing something that would be a reason why the Ref 100 is worse.

    Cheers,
    Sunil

BK Electronics are closed for a short period at the moment, but you might want to check out their BK XLS 200.

It's a far better performer that either of the MJA's mentioned and alot cheaper once you factor in the inclusion of a high-level lead etc. The build quality is pretty much identical as well. Put up a thread about a similar sub, here: http://www.avforums.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=76601

Ok then, just "cheaper" if you ignore the lead which most people don't use.

    lol.

    Guys,

I'm also planning to buy a sub and a bit struggling to make my final decision.

I need your opinion based on your experience and 'hear say' to these products - so that I can decide which on to buy.

    Rel Quake
    MJ Acoustics Reference 100
    B&W ASW600

    Could you help?

    Cheerio

I have to decide between REL Quake and MJ Acoustics Pro 50...

    I have B&W DM602S3; LCR60S3 and a STR DB940.

    Regards

Not that I don't value your opinion, MuFu, but I was just wondering if there are any other users of BK Electronics subs on the Forums? I notice that you bought the XLS10 sub, rather than the XLS200 sub they are advertising now.

Does anyone have a BK XLS200, and if so, would you recommend it?

I think that Dan Gleebles has heard one of these subs so if he doesn't spot this thread try sending him a PM.

I'm not sure who has an XLS200, but there was some interest and maybe a thread or two a while back. The XLS10 uses exactly the same driver and amp, in a slightly larger cabinet. Very happy with it so far - IMO, better than all B&W subs short of the ASW675 and comparable to a Q200E. Cost aside, I'd take this over the REL sub, for sure.

I have heard the CHT-10 briefly and not in ideal circumstances, so wouldn't like to comment without a proper demo. I suspect the Velo offers lower distortion than these BK subs while falling slightly behind in terms of SPL.

Anybody who uses a REL subwoofer up to 1998 will have some influence from BK and that is a fact. The XLS200 is a combination of a respected drive unit with a quality plate amp in a small enclosure.

As I work for BK I am always going to be biased, it is a very good sub IMO better than the Q200e (but half the price). if you PM me I can tell you a sub with the same parts in so you can compare prices.

Ian, I did laugh when you said I might have heard one :rotfl:

I was being diplomatic as I didn't know that you had "come out" and to everybody else, Mr Gleebles probably knows as much about subwoofers as anyone here and a hell of a lot more than most so his opinion is always worth listening to.

Back from hols so only just read this

Yes the ref 100 is a better bet than the pro 50, even if it was £100 more I would have bought it. Demos are hard though - most dealers still seem to have the pro 50
