Given that the Q is best for movies and the ST for music, has anyone tried mixing the two?

I'm toying with the idea of connecting an ST by the high level inputs, thus I imagine "Direct" mode would be a kind of "Direct plus Sub" on CD replay.

If I also connect a Q by the low level inputs (and maybe the ST as well) then these would operate when the .1 LFE signal was present, eg DTS movie.

Any comment/advice on this idea will be most welcome!

    Thanks,

    Derek

I'm not sure that I would agree with your "given" as I feel that the ST range are better all round subwoofers than the Q range and I doubt whether any Q sub ( I have never heard the Q400 ) is better than my Storm was.

As a matter of interest do you already have these two subs or are you thinking of buying a pair.

    Hi Ian,

Rel told me about the concept of ST/Music and Q/Movies so I accepted their opinion.

I have a Storm 3 and a Strata 3 at present; will try the Storm with a Q400E next week and report back.

    Regards,

    Derek

I think that's marketspeak in order to sell more Q subs. In reality the AV market tends to be less fussy than the hifi market and the main appeal of the Q150 and Q200 over the ST range is their compact size.

I think that you may be disappointed if you replace the Strata with a Q400 as you won't be getting much extra for your money.

I upgraded my Storm 3 to a cheaper SVS sub and the difference was quite profound as the American sub is louder, deeper and audibly distortion free.

If anyone's interested :boring: :boring: , I've abandoned this idea. Not because of the Rels - because of my TMA Room Equalisation.

If I connect the Storm via HiLevel then the "equalised/filtered" L&R signals are sent directly to the sub and the TMA filters on the sub signal are bypassed - a double detrimental whammy. This sounded inferior and a check with an SPL meter showed the sub resonances shining through :thumbsdow .

If I connect via LoLevel and listen in direct plus sub mode then only filtered low freqs go to the sub and the response is flat :smashin: .

So it's back to the drawing board and if anyone is looking for a Q400E, then look hard enough and you'll find a mint bargain.
