I wouldn't spend £400 on something that was just OK but unfortunately I haven't heard the Mission either. I know that Eric is a good friend of mine but you shouldn't discount the Velodyne which is cheaper than either of the above.

I know, Ian - Eric is a top bloke.

However, i need the sub to look nice too (One man can endure only so many horse whippings from his wife before it becomes boring)

and the mission looks tasty, also the spec seems very close to the velodyne. I think (waits for applause) i will order one.

Then change my mind.

Then Hate myself.

Then get another horse whipping.

Then buy Velodyne.

spec here: http://www.mission.co.uk/product/m5/m5as-spec.htm

I saw the review in HCC and they quite liked it. I've never seen it mentioned anywhere on the forum though.

As you have now bought the sub, you shouldn't be asking questions like "what's it like in movies" as you may not like the answers :D

Take care setting it up and I'm sure that it'll be fine but please report back anyway.

Thanks Ian,

I buying blind as it means i will forge my own opinion, im so very gullable you see.

Anyhoo - heres hoping its ok and my 10th TV in 2 years is my last one for a while.

Spec seems OK but they tend to be meaningless as it's all about design and quality of components used. A sub can have a huge driver and very powerful amp but if it's not designed well, it won't perform well.

My last sub was a REL Q Bass and nowadays people would laugh at the spec as it only had a 40watt amp. Put it up against many modern subs with six times the power and it would still win hands down.

I only sold it as I bought a Storm on the spur of the moment.

astonbilla bought this sub last week.had to take it back couldnt get it to sound right .when buying a sub you need to think about placement [the other half whinging] this sub seems to like plenty of space round it. where it did sound ok wasnt allowed to leave it there mega earache.so all iam saying is even agood sub can sound crap if not placed right. hope i havent put you on a downer but being able to demo stuff in your own home can help you make the best choice. gonzo

what did you get instead?

astonbilla i ended up getting relq-150 . this sub was much easier to site also it had the best sound ie tight deep bass and dynamic
sound.also may i add that i did listen to a few other subs.
i havent heard velodyne cht 10 which is very well thought but without a demo how would i know if i would encounter any problems with placement to get the best from a product .what sounds good in one room could sound bad in another due to room size furniture and limitations on where it can be put.I know the rel gets some stick but this sub does sound good in MY room
as iam sure the mission does in other rooms.

i was originally tempted by the REL due to its magazine reviews. However, they got slaughtered on these forums though so i went right of them. I heard one and thought it was ok - i would have auditioned the Mission also, but no-one had it in stock.

I am going solely on spec and great review it got in Home Cinema Choice. Its already at my house so i hope its ok.

I also hope its ok because the people i got it from (www.thehifistore.co.uk) really don't seem to want to co-operate. I asked them 3 times today via email, where do i stand if it doesn't suit. No reply as yet. What worries me though is on their site they say i have 7 days to return it, but it must be unopened. How the hell can i test it then to see if it is suitable????

rel also got good reviews and still does in cinema mags but it really is down to personal taste a mate once said he had met a really tasty chick but to us she was a right turkey every bodys different and its easy to fall on a wagon when its rolling its best to try things out before commiting .dont know how you stand on the consumer side of the law you could give citizens advice a ring they would know.iam sure if you keep all the origanal packaging you would be able to send it back.

You have the right to return faulty goods within the guarantee period. What you don't have is the right to return goods after they have been used because they don't suit you. They are not on sale or return and you can't expect to accept them back as they can't sell them as new.

I have had a look at the web site and it's quite clear :-

You have the right to cancel your order within seven working days following the day after the date of delivery and return the goods, (at your own expense) we have supplied to us for a full refund excluding any delivery charges either to or from your address. The goods must be unused and in the original unopened packaging. If the packaging has been opened we will not give a refund and you will have to pay the cost of us returning the products to you. PLEASE MAKE SURE THE GOODS YOU ORDER ARE THE GOODS YOU WANT BEFORE ORDERING.

I didn't find it that hard to set up, as long as its 12 inches from any walls and not near a corner it sounds great. Used to have a Yamaha SW160 and i borrowed a Yamaha 800 before I got the mission and the difference is huge, the Mission wins every time. Great with movies and pretty damn nifty with music too. The Prodigy have never sounded so good :D :D

Ian,

under the terms of the distance selling regulations act 2000. The only items that must be returned unopened are pre-recorded music and computer games.

Many sites including unbeatable and hifijunkies adhere to this and if you are not satisfied, you can return the product as long as you foot the bill for return delivery.

I have decided to send the sub back to these guys as they would not reply to me this afternoon, and any emails i got were cheeky and unhelpful. All i wanted to know was could they do it any cheaper??

NIGHTMAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARE

i told you i should have bought a velodyne from Eric!

Have a look at the Velodyne range in Power Buys forum as if you buy your 3802 you will still have enough cash left to buy a sub that will bring a smile to your face.

Bill - I despair :)
