Another great review, Cass. ( but is "besting" a word ?? "Beating" ? ) Only watched part of this yet, so will enjoy when i can relax & watch it through.

Good review but awful, awful film.
3 is probably still my favourite, with 5,1,4 then 2 way back.

Nice review Cas. One thing though I'd say it's a rip off of Notorious rather than being inspired by that film. My wife was really annoyed with that aspect and often has a rant about it.

I always loved the ‘Mission: Improbable’ extra on the DVD, with Ben Stiller and Tom Cruise hamming it up as stuntman and star respectively. Brilliant ending to it too.

This is an OTT action classic (I love Broken Arrow as well!) , the others are more spy/thriller territory. Can’t wait to see it in 4K.

Forgotten about Broken Arrow - comes under "a guilty pleasure" - may even have it as a DVD. Hmm, time to clear out the cupboard

      Agreed

Prior to the release of MI5 in 2016, I watched the first 4 on Blu-ray and MI2 is dire really.

The whole thing is a confused mess, I don't think there's as much action as people have made out (until maybe the end). Dougrey Scott is awful (A 6' Scottish man pretending to be a 5'6" American?). Anthony Hopkins 3 minute cameo is the only real good thing about it.

      I'd say 3,5,1,4......................................2

I remember walking out of the old Edinburgh Odeon having watched this and overhearing someone complaining about Dougray Scott's "crap unconvincing Scottish accent"...

Ummm.......... Perhaps they hadn't encountered anyone from Dunfermline...

      Because he's Hunt's double.

I know: it's tenuous. They have devices to change their voices so the accent makes no odds, and I don't think Cruise is playing a 5'6" character even if that's the actor's height (lifts etc).

Exactly, at one point the movie states that Dougrey Scott's character has doubled for Ethan Hunt on more than one occasion.

Sorry mate, my point was that if he's got a voice modifier, and if the person he's supposed to be doubling is supposed to be, say 5'10" (even if the actor isn't, the character is), I can't really see why it makes any difference if he's a couple of inches taller and Scottish?

Eh? When has it been established that Ethan Hunt is 3" taller than Tom Cruise?

By implication of the fact that all of the actors/actresses he plays against look shorter than (or at least no taller than) him. As with Casablanca, mentioned above, this kind of thing is not uncommon. Tom Cruise isn't playing a 5'6" character, which I thought would have been obvious (Rebecca Ferguson is 5'7" for starters - see photo). So having Cruise playing a few inches taller and Scott play a couple of inches shorter makes the disparity non-existent.

Hell even their final fight scene together doesn't really reveal this (perhaps they dug a trench in the sand).

Not a guilty pleasure for me. I love BA and would much rather have that on 4K than this film.

You're meant to leave your brain at the door when you watch these kind of films :p

I dont see anything wrong with MI2, it's a typical Woo film and not any worse than the likes of Face Off. The scene in the lab is one of the best of all the MI films

      @Casimir Harlow

ha ha ha ... just watched this last night Cas and totally love the line from Anthony Hopkins too ... it is timed & delivered perfectly by Hopkins isn't it :rotfl:

Some really cringe elements of the film (after 18 years) but still enough substance for an enjoyable and entertaining film with some excellent action scenes and loving my soundtracks as I do, I really enjoy elements of Zimmers thumping score to this one

Great fair balanced review as always.

      I'm moving onto re-watching 3 next :smashin:

      Thanks Glenn.

Yeah Hopkins is great. Cruise looks totally lost for words.

It's kind of the ugly duckling in the series, but I still have a soft spot for it.

I remember seeing the first film in the cinema as a teen and being frustrated by how they (quite literally) killed the team-based dynamics of the show (which I loved as a kid) and by little things like how they barely used the actual theme music (Shifrin wasn't it?).

So four years later, I was probably in the full Woo love era of my life - Better Tomorrow, Killer, Hard Boiled, Hard Target, Broken Arrow, Face/Off, in that order, the man could do no wrong in my eyes.

I can remember seeing the trailer / promo clips for MI2 and thinking that it was a dream come true. Forget DePalma, give me Woo any day!

I absolutely loved the film after seeing it, came out wanting to climb mountains (I did rock climbing at the time, and subsequently learnt how to do the double-dyno which Cruise looks like he's proficient at), loved the score and bought the soundtrack, and even (I think) had a gif of one of the kicks from the final fight on my phone, which I seem to remember being one of the first gifs I ever had.

There's so much wrong with it, Dougray Scott was a poor choice for what could have been an interesting character (and anti-Hunt) and I don't think I'll ever forgive the lack of chemistry between Cruise and Thandie (or that car-dance), but I'd probably never get bored of watching the entire Zimmer-tastic sequence which kicks off when he's running and rips the mask off in the final act, and just goes into pure Woo action with Zimmer's OTT version of the theme playing almost incessantly in the background (intercut with Thandie meandering really slowly to a cliff as Lisa Gerrard aahh aahhhs).

Yup, it'll always have a place in my MI collection no matter how crazy it is.
